Scottish golfer ties Kingsmill record, owns afternoon lead

Mhairi McKay, a 33-year-old from Scotland, tied the tournament record on Kingsmill’s River Course todday, firing an 8-under-par 63 in the morning half of the first round of the $2.2 million Michelob Ultra Open.

It was good for a one-shot lead over Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam, who carded a bogey-free 64.

“I shot below my age on both nines,” said McKay, a five-time runner-up on the LPGA Tour. “Maybe that should be my goal for the year.”

After firing a 4-under 32 on the front, McKay’s putter heated up on the back nine as she drained birdie putts of 28, 20 and 20 feet at the 11th, 14th and 15th holes. A five-footer at the home hole capped her round.

McKay tied the tournament record shared by Kim Williams, Sarah Lee and Jee Young Lee.

Kingsmill, with a slight but steady drizzle in the air all day, was nearly defenseless and Sorenstam wasn’t the only big name high on the leaderboard. Lorena Ochoa, who has won five times already this season and is the world’s top-ranked woman, fired a 6-under 65 and is tied for third with Diana D’Alessio.
