Waggin' Tails

Wondering what you can do with your dog in Hampton Roads? Get the answers here. I'll be discussing dog care, nutrition, training, play, and games to play with your dog.

Pet owners should be well informed when it comes to caring for their pet. Recalls on food ingredients, brand name foods, and toys make it necessary for pet parents to have information. But there is so much information it would make your head spin. Angie has a knack for getting and sorting this information. Having run two pet related businesses and having rescued two dogs so far, she has years of experience in pet care and training. For questions or comments, you can contact her at bigdogmom@mailpuppy.com.

Stray Cats and Dog Training

Well, I called Animal Control about the stray cats around here. They came out with 4 humane traps a couple weeks ago and set them up. We caught 3 cats in 45 minutes. There was another one in the trap later that night. Hopefully that will take care of the stray cat problem for a couple months. I’m sure when the feral kittens start roaming; I’ll have to call them again.

In the meantime, I’ve been looking for effective ways to train Mac. I don’t need another broken wrist. I started using his Halti headcollar again. It comes with a little training manual. So far, it seems to be working well. He’s responding and actually listening now.

I’ve also been checking out training newsletters on the internet. SitStayFetch has a free 6 day training course and a weekly newsletter. I’ve been following these and they’re working well too. Of course, they want you to buy their books but, you know I’m too cheap for that. There is enough free information out there so I shouldn’t have to pay for it. It does take time to find it though. The website for the free newsletter and course at SitStayFetch is www.kingdomofpets.com/dogobediencetraining.

Now, for those of you with normal pets, there are local classes with the parks departments around here. They do charge, but these classes are a great way to socialize your dog. I don’t have normal pets so these aren’t for me. I called all the local parks departments for information about the classes for you. Four local departments offer classes. Some of them allow you to watch a class to see if you like it first. Most of them have classes on Saturdays for several weeks.

Newport News has Saturday classes at Fido Field and they charge $65. The information should be in the Daily Press around May 21st or 22nd. Their phone number is 926-1400.

Poquoson offers 5 week classes during the spring, summer, and fall. They only charge $35 and the classes are available for all the local areas, not just Poquoson. Call Khristie at 868-3580 for more information.

Williamsburg also offers classes in the spring and, they have a waiting list. I’m not sure why. You can call them at 259-3760 for information.

Chesapeake also offers summer classes. I don’t know what they charge or how long they last. Call Kerry at 382-8467.

No matter where you go, you should be able to watch a class or two before you sign up. Make sure that the training methods used are ones you feel comfortable with. Also, check on what reinforcements are used. Some trainers use treats and other trainers don’t. If you don’t feel right about a class, instructors, or a training method, don’t sign up for it. If these don’t fit your schedule, call the local pet shops. Several of them offer classes too.

Now, the Suffolk Humane Society needs some help. They need two places in Suffolk that would allow them to set up their Neuter Scooter. One of the places used in the past now has permanent renters. The other place was destroyed in the tornado. They also need some help with fostering pets. Call 757-54-7855 if you can help.
