SUFFOLK
One week after a tornado crashed like a wrecking ball through town, survivors gathered at an inter-church prayer service Monday with a common message: Thank you, God.
“Father, we thank you tonight for what you’ve done. We thank you for the gift of life,” the organizer of the event, the Rev. Michael Ola of New Life Church, Suffolk, said in the opening prayer.
As many as 500 people crowded Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church, on Godwin Boulevard, grateful that the catastrophe killed no one, despite wreaking $28 million in damage.
About 25 churches in Suffolk participated in the 7 p.m. thanksgiving service. “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!” the crowd sang in opening song.
The service alternated between prayer, music and harrowing testimonies from survivors.
Lory Horne, who lives in the Burnett’s Mill neighborhood, said her house lost power before the storm hit. She went upstairs to find candles.
“I looked out the window and looked dead into the tornado,” Horne said. She ran downstairs and hit the floor with her husband and child. “My husband just kept praying, ‘Lord, protect our family.’”
“Our house is still standing and we totally praise Him for that,” she said, “God has just blessed us.”
