SUFFOLK
The city’s police department spokeswoman will head the new Office of Media and Community Relations beginning July 1, Suffolk officials announced Thursday.
Debbie George, a lieutenant with the police department, will be the lead spokeswoman for the city. Her job will include developing media and public relations strategies, recommending policy initiatives and overseeing the city’s Web site and municipal cable channel.
The media and community relations office replaces the current communications department, now led by Dennis Craff. He became Suffolk’s first communications director in 2003 and is retiring at the end of June so he can homeschool his granddaughter.
George will no longer work under the police department but will respond to fire- and law enforcement-related inquiries by the news media. City Manager Selena Cuffee-Glenn made the change in an effort to centralize communications.
George has worked for the city for 22 years. She became the department’s public information officer and Crime Line coordinator in 2003.

That Was Fast
Wow, what happened to advertising a position and going through the interview process? Oh, silly me,I forgot we are dealing with the City of Suffolk. I was wondering if Mr. Craff was truly making this move voluntarily, now I know he was forced into retirement. Why such a rush to fill such an important job. I don't have anything against Mrs. George she does a great job as spokesperson for the police department. Okay Suffolk, who is next on your list?
George, Suffolk Top Spokeswoman
Congratulations to Lt. George for becoming the new Media and Communications Director for the City of Suffolk.
Will the office for Freedom of Information be dissolved? Considering there is no need to have a seperated department to shuffle paper work for Freedom of Information inquiries?
