Chadwick Deforest and Shirley Eanes met on a telephone chat line.

Deforest, a 32-year-old Yorktown man, wanted to hire someone to rape his ex-girlfriend and leave her in the streets, police said. And Eanes, a 62-year-old Virginia Beach woman, said she knew someone who could help him out, according to authorities.

That someone ended up telling the story to Suffolk police, the department’s spokeswoman said. N ow Deforest and Eanes have been charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.

Deforest, who is being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail, also was charged with solicitation to commit a felony and attempted aggravated malicious wounding, according to a Suffolk police news release.

The case is “unusual but not unique,” said Suffolk police Lt. Debbie George.

George said that the telephone chat line was similar to an Internet chat room. That’s where Deforest and Eanes met, she said. George said she didn’t know details about the chat line.

Eanes, however, was able to hook Deforest up with a man George would only describe as a “third party.” Deforest told that person about his original desire to have his ex-girlfriend raped. He then asked if she could be disfigured and hospitalized, George said. He also wanted her truck vandalized, according to the news release.

The third party was “concerned about what the person was trying to hire him to do,” George said. And he never intended to follow through with it, she said.

But he did go to Suffolk police the first week in May, even though Deforest, Eanes and the ex-girlfriend were not from there, George said.

Police helped arrange a meeting Wednesday , George said. Deforest brought a down payment of less than $100 to the meeting, which was videotaped by police, she said.

Deforest was arrested after the meeting.

Another Wednesday meeting was arranged with Eanes, who showed up to collect her “finder’s fee,” George said. She was arrested.

The third party was not arrested, George said.
