A Navy sailor injured in a crash May 21 died Tuesday morning, Virginia Beach police said today.

Police identified him as Daniel Mayberry, 21. He died at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Mayberry and another sailor were injured in a crash in the 2600 block of Shore Drive, police said. Police have not identified the second sailor, who was the driver and remains in "very serious" condition at the hospital, said Officer Jimmy Barnes, a police spokesman.

The wreck pinned the men inside the vehicle and caused severe head trauma to both.

Police said the crash happened at 12:44 a.m. as the men were headed east on Shore Drive. The vehicle left the road and hit a utility pole, rolling several times. The impact knocked down the pole. Immediately afterward another car came upon the scene and hit the pole, police said. The driver of that car was not injured.

Alcohol and speed were factors in the first crash, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
