HAMPTON
As many as 6,000 people are expected this week for the 94th annual Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, one of the nation’s biggest and oldest black clergy gatherings.
The conference, which featured Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama last year, kicks off Monday. It overlaps with the 74th annual choir directors’ and organists’ guild workshop.
The conference includes preaching, musical performances and workshops examining biblical interpretation.
Bishop Charles Blake of West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles will be the keynote preacher.
Robert Franklin, president of Morehouse College, will speak on social ethics. The event concludes Friday.
Past participants have included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1962, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. T.D. Jakes. Registration is required. For information, call (757) 727-5367 or visit minconf.hamptonu.edu.
