VIRGINIA BEACH

State police identified the man killed in a crash on Interstate 264 at First Colonial Road in Virginia Beach this morning as Paul Norfleet Sutton Sr.

Sutton, 82, of Thalia Drive in Virginia Beach, was headed west in a Ford Escape shortly after 7 a.m. when he veered across the grassy median and hit a Ford F-250 that was headed east, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a state police spokeswoman.

He was taken to a hospital where he died a short time after the crash, police said. The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old Hampton man, also was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Witnesses told police that Sutton was going faster than 80 mph when he ran off the road.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt, Cotten said.

The right two lanes were closed while state police reconstructed the crash and gathered evidence.

Shortly after 11 a.m., authorities were reopening the lanes.
