Amerigroup lays off 80, including about 40 in Virginia Beach

Amerigroup Corp., citing the increased pressure to contain costs, said Monday that it eliminated slightly more than 80 jobs, including about 40 in Virginia Beach.

“We thought this was the appropriate action to take in light of the current business environment,” said Kent Jenkins Jr., a spokesman for the Virginia Beach-based company.

Amerigroup, which provides managed care for beneficiaries of Medicaid and other government-funded health care programs, said it also cut 165 positions that were already vacant.

The job cuts occurred throughout the company. No additional reductions are planned, Jenkins said.

The reductions leave Amerigroup with slightly more than 4,000 employees, including 1,800 in Virginia Beach.

Earlier this month, Amerigroup suspended its investor guidance of expected earnings for 2008, blaming higher-than-expected expenses related to providing private-duty nursing to beneficiaries at its middle Tennessee health plan. The company said it was negotiating with that state for a retroactive rate increase to cover the additional expenses.

Amerigroup also is winding down the operations of its Washington, D.C., health plan and withdrawing from Memphis, Tenn., where it bought a health care plan last year with the intent of expanding to that market.

Bush's trillion dollar war is ruining the economy

Bush's trillion dollar war is ruining the economy. Bin Laden said his goal was to bankrupt America. MISSON ACCOMPLISHED.

it's all the economy and not the company?

oh please, they're about as crooked as Enron. Have you not followed the companies shady, dishonest practices in the last 10 years like with the state of Illinois et. al.? People will still be hired, they just take kindlier to certain tanned shades of skin and like to cater to our geographical neighbors to employ, and they're REAL flexible with taking the time to allow to get those 'legal necessities' of US citizenship documentation together,,,heck, they might even conveniently forget about it , they're good like that, that's why they have so much money....oops, I mean to the public,,,no they need to cut back, that's right, I forgot....tragedy.....and don't be fooled, they golf with and go to family picnics good ol' Timmy K.

Guess I wont be getting a

Guess I wont be getting a call then. Had to resumes there. Oh well, less money for Kaine.

Okay you two...

...You're in timeout!

Leave it to Lord Barrett to defend more tax hikes

Yup, the working class in Tidewater are losing their jobs and the rest are getting hammered by inflation - and business lobbyists like Mike Barrett just keep pushing their same self-serving agenda of corprate welfare, misdirecting our tax funds to pay for their wish list of pet projects and special interests boondoggles. Well Mike, the economy is heading for a very rough time and you and your wealthy business lobby pals are so out of touch that you can't even comprehend how much your remarks are providing the public's with a clear understanding of the business lobby's disregard for the welfare of those you citizens that you keep target to pay for the port's exapnsion and the rest of the wrong package of highways for our region - highways choosen to serve business, not citizens needing traffic congestion relief.

Leave it to Greenmun to

Leave it to Greenmun to paint a dark picture just because a firm lays off a few positions. I thought that was why private enterprise was so efficient; we don't wait for crisis or emergency fiscal situations, we act in advance to adjust to market conditions. But the need for public infrastructure remains regardless of the growth rate in a particular industry or company. Instead of obsessing over 40 employees, you had better pay attention to the environment for the 1,800 employees who remain on the payroll in Virginia Beach. And thanks to anti tax zealots like Greenmun, our local road building is almost extant because the state match has been depleted by 60%, and improvements to I-264 and I-64, both referendum projects, have been on the shelf since the referendum was defeated, and the current leadership in the House of Delegates continues to deny we have a problem. So thanks Greenmun; your anti tax zealotry is on display again and again.

The economy is heading down, down, down ...

Layoffs, a declining U.S. Dollar, incredible gas price increases, the cost of food skyrocketing, home values (equity) declining, consumer credit drying up, years of double-digit, compounded real estate property tax hikes for local homeowners, endless increases in bloated local government budgets, bloated state budgets, a war in the Middle East we cannot afford, and our Governor banging his drum to jack up billions more in new taxes, new fees, and new tolls everywhere in our state and region to fund some corrupt wish list highway boondoggles for the business lobby ... friends, the wheels are falling off the wagon. Tough times are around the corner. If Obama is elected - taxes will eclipse our ability to pay as the working class will pick up the cost of everyone else's healthcare.
