VIRGINIA BEACH

Police have identified a man they say was shot and killed Saturday by the owner of a pizza restaurant he was trying to rob.

Johnny Marocco Williams, 41, of Winder Court in Hampton, died at Dominick’s Pizza and Pasta in the 4200 block of Holland Road shortly after 10 p.m., according to a police news release.

Investigators said that Williams, wearing a baseball cap and a bandana covering his face, went into the business through a back door, police wrote in the release. He ordered employees into the office in the back of the restaurant and pulled out a gun.

He ordered restaurant owner Ferdinando Abbondante to open the safe, Abbondante told the Virginian-Pilot during the weekend.

Abbondante said Williams pointed the gun at an employee and insisted that he open the safe. Abbondante said he opened the safe and Williams fired once, missing him and the other employees.

Abbondante took his own gun out of the safe and fired back, he said.

The case is under investigation, police said.
