Biz Buzz: Is Stihl still on edge over tools tax?

Posted to: Business Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Think all is fine at Stihl Inc., the city's largest manufacturer, now that the City Council repealed a 90 percent increase to its machinery and tools tax?

Well, Stihl President Fred Whyte recently wrote a loaded thank-you letter to city leaders.

Whyte carped about published comments from City Manager Jim Spore, who was quoted as saying the city heard no formal protests before the tax increase was approved as part of the annual budget. Spore said the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce didn't like the hike but understood that the city needed revenue. He added that Stihl was made aware of it, too.

Whyte said Stihl knew nothing until the budget was passed. He said the chamber was likewise clueless.

Stihl and the state manufacturers association complained, and the increase was rescinded. Whyte's solution to any lingering tensions is an invite for city leaders to tour Stihl's campus later this year.

Apparently, nothing soothes bruised egos more than putting them in a room with chain saws.
