Hillary Rodham Clinton ended her historic campaign for the presidency on Saturday and told supporters to unite behind rival Barack Obama, closing out a race that was as grueling as it was groundbreaking.
The former first lady, who as recently as Tuesday declared herself the strongest candidate, gave Obama an unqualified endorsement and pivoted from her role as determined foe to absolute ally.
"The way to continue our fight now to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our energy and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States," she said in a speech before cheering supporters packed into the ornate National Building Museum, not far from the White House she longed to reign in.
"Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary campaign he has won. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him and I ask of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me," the New York senator said.
With that, Clinton placed herself solidly behind her Senate colleague from Illinois, a political sensation and the first black to secure a presidential nomination.
For Clinton and her supporters, it was a poignant moment, the end of an extraordinary run that began with an air of inevitability and certain victory. About 18 million people voted for her; it was the closest a woman has come to capturing a nomination.
Joining her on stage were her husband, the former president, and their daughter, Chelsea, before she took their leave as she addressed the crowd.
Obama secured the 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the nomination Tuesday after primaries in South Dakota and Montana. He planned to spend the weekend at home in Chicago.
Clinton supporters began lining up at dawn to attend the farewell address. A smattering of Obama backers showed up as well, saying they did so as a gesture of party unity.

Where's the logic?
If Obama has one black parent and one white parent, why is he considered black? If we saw 50 white people and 50 black people in a crowd, would the press refer to them as a black crowd? Regardless of that, it is not his race that will keep me from voting for him, it is his lack of any message. It's like someone said to him, " Go stand at a podium and say the word "change" 100 times and you can be president."

Excellent point!
MY d.i.v.o.r.c.e became final today
"When Hillary supported and defended her husband during "Monika-gate", claiming a "vast Right wing conspiracy" she lost my admiration and respect. She put her political ambitions above all else. She could have shown true strength, self confidence and character by parting ways with Bill."
Brigitte, divorce is what's wrong with hetero's today. Over 50% get them and get them right away, and often at the drop of a hat. Bill Clinton's mistake was a family matter and not a news media matter when it came to what Hillary should or should not do. How can anyone lose admiration or respect because Hillary or any other woman decide's to stay with her husband and family? Personally I think you gave a lame excuse.
Citizen 2583
True, the Repuplican Party could not defeat them. However, 57% of American voters, voted NO to Clinton in 92 and 96. Remember that. And, the only way Obama was able to win was for the same Democrat Party to disenfranchise Democrat voters in Florida and Michigan. So, in fact he did not beat Hillary either. He got by with a little help from his friends, Howard the Screamer Dean for one.
Come November, Obama is going to get his clock cleaned by what would have been a sure loser, McCain. Obama was simply used by the Democrat Party elite to get rid of the Clintons. They don't need him anymore.
Democrats will win both houses of Congress with or without Obama and McCain is as liberal as they are on everything excpet national security. So, with McCain the Dems still get their man. Which is why they all voted for McCain in the Republican Primaries.
Why Hillary did not get my vote!
When Hillary supported and defended her husband during "Monika-gate", claiming a "vast Right wing conspiracy" she lost my admiration and respect. She put her political ambitions above all else. She could have shown true strength, self confidence and character by parting ways with Bill. Instead, she compromised her integrity and pride by clinging to a shameless womanizer. She could have shown that women can make it without being humiliated and dragged into the gutter by a scoundrel husband. I truly believe, if she had run as Senator Hillary Rodham, she could have become President Hillary Rodham. Yes, 54% of women voted for her, but 46% did not! WHY??
Why should I care?
Why should I care which of these two Marxists gets the Democratic nomination?
who will ge the women's vote?
Hillary had the women's vote, wil, they switch to Obama or McCain? The women in this country could turn this election upside down.
My other concern is, is BO a racist?
All this jibber jabber ...
... from people who have had more success predicting lottery numbers than the outcome of political campaigns, is amusing. Thanks for the daily bell laugh. I am sure your insightful and balanced comments are swinging thousands of votes. You've certainly convinced yourselves. LOL
Here's something to toss in the cup the next time you are reading tea leaves. Regardless of which side of the wacko divide you claim to be on, Obama came out of nowhere to beat Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and the DNC.
That's something republicans couldn't do, and they spent eight long years trying. Hillary tried the same silly arguments I see here to no effect. For an inexperienced guy, Obama did OK.
And whether you agree with it or not, Obama is perceived to be the candidate of change. Is that important? If it wasn't George McCain wouldn't be suddenly claiming he was all about change too. (Good luck with that George III.)
Mark Twine
You left out one issue. Is BO a racist?
Nope George... BO is not the Messiah...
You're buddy Billy had "No" voting record to stand on for National Issues. He was treated as the Messiah of the party and I'm sure that you remember the walk accross the Bridge to the Tune of "Fleetwood Mac" with Don't Stop Thinking About Tommorow. So retire the soap box.
Actually, I think that the Party has strayed from the long ago vision once placed by JFK. Remember the question? The ultimate question that he asked of each and every one of us? The one that said:
"Ask not want your country can do for YOU, ask what YOU can do for YOUR COUNTRY"... emphasis added...
The point being is that JFK cut the marginal tax rate, he believed in a strong defense and also believed that we should not be asking the government for handouts. We should be asking what we can do for eachother but we shouldn't be asking where the next government check is going to come from.
It's sad, because both of these parties have melded into one huge vacuum. One that believes more money and no thought will actually cure something.
Magic wand
Yep if you elect the democrats they promise to wave their magic and poof! Everything is alright. Remember change is an empty word like eth man in the suit. The real question is why are democrats willing to do anything for the country only when it comes to voting their hide back into office and then once back in they go back to obstructing ?.
Reason or Reverse Racism?
Those who are opposed to McCain are either:
Democrats loyal to their party,
People with guilt issues who have to vote for Obama for fear of being labeled a racist,
Liberal Extremists who would never vote for a Republican,
Or a moderate who thinks Barack Carter would be somehow better than Sen. McCain.
Bottom line is, there's a candidate who genuinely loves the country and the years of service show, that there's a few mistakes in forty years of public service is inevitable. There's also another candidate who feels: tax, tax, tax - let's make everyone government dependent - and since I'm so smart, I know best for you - the more handouts (excuse me 'entitlement programs') I give, the more votes I get - I've gotten proud of this country suddenly.
That's what we're looking at.
no for obama
dont have a problem with a black president but he calls reverend jeremiah wright his spiritual mentor and so i looked up jeremiah wright http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=617eK2XIaLk just one video there are tons. but that dudes head is so screw on backwards n i am not racist but that dude is thinks whites are the devil n thinks everyone is out to get black people.
Prejudice isn't going to go away... Let's be honest
I have followed with interest the campaigns of Clinton and Obama. Unfortunately, I seldom heard either one of them offer specific programs for most of the issues facing Americans (energy, unemployment, No Child Left Behind, etc.). It would have been nice to have heard real specifics, and not generalities, from both of them before the end came. Sadly, it didn't matter which got the Democratic nomination. Each faced real challenges and resistance from parts of the electorate. She is a woman. He is Black. Realistically, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, there are people out there who couldn't deal with a woman as President or a Black as President. It will be interesting to see who Obama picks for his running mate; it will also be interesting to see whom McCain picks. I believe that their choices will speak volumes and influence votes more than in other Presidential races.
pay off
i wonder how much did the DNC and obama pay hillary, to buy her and her constitutants votes, remember she is in debt!as for mark twine's comment about ron paul, well fact is the ron paul conservitive will not settle for john mCcain.i will not waste my time nor my vote on any of these canidates,i plan on voting for ron paul reguardless of the outcome,at least i will have a clear concience.either way obama will not win so all of those liberals extremists don't hold on too tight.because john"father time" mCcain will be the next president!sad isn't it!
The Right President
The right person who needs to be President, is one who has this country's best interest at heart. Both domestic and abroad. We need a president who believes that being ready to defend our borders is important in this ever changing world. We need someone who believes in the military. I believe that these third world leaders and dictators are hoping that Obama get elected. I am hoping against that.
Question?
I just want the ObamaHillaryCrats to just answer the question, "Who is going to pay for the Every Day Is Going To Be Christmas?"
Reason or racism?
Those opposed to Obama are either:
Republicans who are loyal to their party.
Racists who can't accept a black man as president.
Conservative extremists who would never vote for a Democrat. (Ron Paul is their first choice, but they'll settle for elderly man river.)
Or self-described Democrats and "moderates", who for some odd reason, think putting George McCain in office is somehow better than electing Obama.
This last group would have us believe that Obama, whose concerns are very similar to Clinton's and whose solutions differ only in degree from Clinton's, is so lacking in substance that they would vote for a continuation of the bush administration.
I greatly respect Hillary, and would have voted for her if she won the nomination. But I am sure she would be appalled by any Democrat who voted for McCain and the present course. And she would have the same suspicion I do about the real reason for such a destructive vote.
RE: the way I see it
I do agree with you for the most part. No one can be as bad as the incompetant arrogant Bush, and it still amazes me how this man ever got to the Oval Office to begin with, not once but twice. BO scares me! Plain and simple the man scares me and it has nothing to do with me being a racist. I question if BO is not a racist. I guess time will tell, but it will be interesting to see who get's the women's vote. Neither McCain or BO has done well with that group and the women can turn this race up side down.
The Way I See It
We already stooped as low as we could in electing Bush-not once but twice-and barely each time. Talk about someone with no voting record or even any public service prior to becoming Gov of Texas. He also came into POTUS with no foreign policy experience and little domestic policy outside of state issues. McCain was the better choice in 2000 but we got Little Lord Fauntleroy instead. So those issues cannot be used against either candidate as they both have more than Bush did at the national level when he ran. In sum though, I do not know just how much worse it could get under either of the two poor choices we are faced with now. And I would say the same if Hillary was getting the nomination and not Obama. As for being uniters, either of them would likely do better than our current divider-in-chief.
Re:race and politics
"Nice to see that in 2008, we still have people who say, "The country will fall apart if we elect a black man!"
I didn't say the country would fall apart, so please on't try to restate my comment. I said I don't that think BO can unite this country and tath we could see a racial divide.
"you need to listen to something other than Limbaugh and Hannity and start thinking for yourself, but if you think his words are empty, you're not listening to them."
I NEVER listen to Limbaugh or Hannity, and as far as thinking for myself that's exactly what I'm doing. YOU however, have been listening to the talking heads of the news media who thinks BO can walk on water. You might try following your own advise and start thinking for youself. I've listened to BO, Hillary and all the rest of them. I've listen to every debates, and I don't see BO being the leader YOU or the talking heads see. Truth be know if Howdy Doody was running agains Hillary you would ve voting for him.
hillary
Can we all move on now?
Race and politics
The previous post says if Obama is elected, the country will be divided by race. Nice to see that in 2008, we still have people who say, "The country will fall apart if we elect a black man!"
The truth is, I think either McCain or Obama has a chance to unite people. They both seem to have integrity and vision, and neither one has yet begun to sling mud. (We'll wait to see what happens when the GOP turns Karl Rove loose though.)
Obama is a very strong candidate. Anyone who says his oratory has no substance ... you need to listen to something other than Limbaugh and Hannity and start thinking for yourself. You don't have to agree with everything Obama says, but if you think his words are empty, you're not listening to them.
Good riddance
GOOD RIDDANCE, Hillary. Now why don't you drag yourself and Bill back to Arkansas and not bother anyone anymore?
"suspend my campaign"
Notice the semantics. She is not "ending" her campaign. A successful assassination (or two) and she's right back in the fabled catbird seat. Since when has a Bilderberger been defeated?
That these two people could even advance as far as they have in the American political system shows how far we, as a society, have declined down that slippery slope. Is it only Jerry Springer and Oprah viewers that go to the polls these days? May God have mercy on our souls.
Have no fear
BO won't ask Hillary to be VP and Hillary wouldn't want it if he did. BO is the messiah, the rock star, the boy wonder the "next coming" has arrived. He most likely will be the next president, but McCain will put the screws to him on the way to election day so hard he won't know what hit him. Can he stand up to the Republicans NO! Can he unite this country, NO! Will this turn into a country divided by race, VERY LIKELY! BO is filled with cult hype speeched with no substance, he has no voting record to agree or disagree, the man simply has nothing but hollow words that the talking heads of the news media put in our face every moment they could. But you see, none of that matters as long as Hillary Clinton is NOT the candidate. As long as you have BO and not Hillary all is well with the world. Let's see how that all plays out!
Hey Mike,
"I pray that BO doesn't select her as a VeeP"
He would be crazy if he did, it wouldn't be long before she would be asking him if he wanted to take a walk in Fort Marcy Park...
Yeap George....
"Hillary Clinton ran a hard, courageous and Historic race"
Hard race... Yeap, she started off her bid by polling the Super Delegates and threatening some outright. Then her husband went after them telling them that if they did not stand behind her there would be a price to pay via political fall out...
Couragous Race... Yeap, she had the courage to lie... oppps, i'm sorry, to "Mis-speak" quite a few times about things. THat took a lot of courage...
Historic Race... This one I'll give ya without any bashing because it was the first time an irratable white female almost won the nomination...
I pray that BO doesn't select her as a VeeP. I think he'll have a hard enough time running the country, let alone having to run a country with a backseat, nagging driver sitting right behind him yelling at him that he needs to ask for directions...
;-)
News?
This is newsworthy why? She already lost the dem nomination. So here's the great shocker news for you - she dropped out of the race and can you believe it? - supports the dem that won.
I'm so glad all the suspense is over, I was thinking she would throw her delegates to Ron Paul.
candidates...
"can you tell us if all the candidates are false prophets or just outright liars?"
Only when their lips move...
