A pregnant woman was hurt last night in a crash Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Boulevard, police said.

The crash occurred about 11:20 p.m. when the Honda the woman was in collided with an Acura, according to a police news release.

The Honda was headed east on Mercury and was turning left onto Jefferson when it was hit by the Acura on the passenger’s side, police wrote in the release.

The drivers weren’t injured, police wrote. The woman, who was 34 weeks pregnant, was taken to a hospital where a cesarean section was performed.

The woman, who suffered internal injuries, was in intensive care, police wrote. The infant was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m., according to police.

An autopsy will be performed on the infant, said Holly Tepper, police spokeswoman. She could not say if the child was alive at birth.

Investigators are trying to determine if one of the drivers ran a red light, according to the release. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Investigators don’t know if anyone in either vehicle was wearing a seatbelt, the release says.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Commowealth’s Attorney’s Office.

I see drivers run red lights...

...as I negotiate this intersection twice a day, five days a week and more on weekends. May not have been the cause in this tragic case, but statistically it is pretty likely. Sympathy to the family.

red light cameras

Red light cameras, especially at that interesection would have answered a few questions already.
