SUFFOLK
Firefighters on Wednesday contained a brush fire near Whaleyville that grew to nearly 20 acres over the afternoon.
The fire, in an area off the 2700 block of Pittmantown Road, was reported just after 11 a.m., said city spokeswoman Debbie George. Only “hot spots” remained by the evening.
No cause has been determined, George said.
Forestry Department workers had to use a plow to access the fire, located near the North Carolina line, she said. No houses or other structures were threatened.

WOW!!
To Inthecountry
For your information, I have lived in the rural confines of Suffolk for 20+ years and I am quite familiar with all of the rural Suffolk roads since I bicycle them quite often. Maybe it was I who flipped you the bird last week after you tried to run me off the road.
Perhaps you are too busy listening to your scanner to read the paper or check Internet news links. Try turning off your scanner and reading what is really happening around your city. It would open your eyes because your field of view is quite narrow at this moment. If you had read the news, you might think as I do, that something suspicious is going on in your neck of the woods.
Union man uninformed
Union man needs to listen to his scanner a little closer. Fire was started by lightning as determined by VDOF yesterday. This is common in the country where we have trees and woods. With the lack of rainfall, this smoldered for a few days then caught up and burned until noticed. We in the country would like for you to know that all things that happen are not suspicios.
Maybe Suspicious
That area of Suffolk has been experiencing a lot of fires. On Pittmantown Road, last month, a family's house burned down and several weeks before that fire, a turn of the century old house burned to the ground, and that fire was investigated as being suspicious, since a neighbor across the street was awakened by someone driving very fast down the street.
