David Craft, the assignment manager at WTKR News Channel 3, left the television station Monday, general manager Jeff Hoffman said.
He is at least the fourth employee, following anchor Les Smith, news director Shane Moreland and assistant director Melissa Klinzing, to have left the CBS affiliate in the past week.
Hoffman, who took over earlier this month, declined to discuss Craft’s departure from WTKR, which is the lowest rated of the local TV newscasts. But Hoffman said the changes are “designed to give us the opportunity to build an audience and to get people to watch our newscast.”

Sinking ship
WTKR is a sinking ship. Dump Ciera and her pricey salary, she is the main reason I don't watch the station...and is the main reason several of my friends don't as well. Instead of tabloid tv, just report the news in a professional manner. Any vestiges of respect I had for the station were gone after Ed Hughes' passing.
Note to new management
The image of the station needs to be gutted and totally redone. Dump the "NewsChannel" brand... it's outdated and tired. People will still see it as the same channel 3 with new people and a new graphics package.
Try a different style. Professional, yet different. You don't need to copy 10 and 13 to be professional. Take a note from other stations around the country, see what they're doing. Stop overhyping weather. And most of all, get journalists people will like to watch, and keep them!
Old School vs Young Corporate Managers
WTKR-TV should be known as the Titantic the station has hit an iceberg as in going down fast! During the '50s, '60s and '70 WTAR was on top then the corporate buyouts by Garnnett and The New York Times transformed WTAR into WTKR-TV. The young corporates fresh out of college and have not worked in a television station. Bring their fire "Old School" employees and replace them with young cheap staffers, "Thinking!" The young corporates are bottom-line feeders with no sense of what makes a television works.
I have worked in this television market for many years. I have seen young corporate types come-and-go! They are only concerned with getting the upper corporate positions and high salaries.
Their are a number of "Old School" managers and staffers which could bring WTKR-TV back on top in this area. But, the young corporate managers can learn a lesson or two from "Old Schoolers". But will the young corporates listen, "NO"! I too, have been an employee of WTKR-TV and have seen positions eliminated in the name of "Corporate Bottom-Line".
Become Professional
They need to dump the sitcom/talk show format of the news cast and show a professionally produced broadcast. The weather forecast is more of a game show/sitcom with the silly videos and maybe 1-2 minutes of weather. Watching them play with their super-duper viper toy is more like a child with a new gameboy. Then they slap that huge logo across the bottom of the screen, and half the video is covered. Rather than fire the news readers, they need to fire the director and get someone in there that can monitor what the cast is reading and show the correct video. They are a joke over there.
WTKR
Dump Ciera!
WTKR
I don't necessarily think they are all "leaving" on their own accord because of management. I think they are leaving because management (new, per the article) is making them leave (aka... FIRED). Further, they are NOT owned by the New York Times as one poster stated. They were bought out by Oak Hill Capital (private equity firm) last summer. The New York Times sold all of their TV stations at that time. I wish WTKR the best of luck!
I am trying to think why we should really care?
Most of the "news" all of the stations put out is filled with violence and bad happenings. It is geared to cause us fear and loathing. We really only watch to see what the weather will be. I really don't think we would miss it if they only had the weather. It will do those employees good to have to get out and do a job like the rest of us.
WTKR NEWS
Do you think new news anchors is going to create more viewers. Then you need to think again. Veiwers want to see and listen to people they know by name. They are working people just like you and me. We do not like to see people Edited out a job WE do not feel at home with strangers forced on us. Its not a matter of looks or sexist sound bites that make an anchor. I feel there is going to be a shake down at the top of WTKR,
and will loose their network to some one else with real feelings and
a honest view to viewers.
Down Hill
Locally, WTKR has been doing poorly for a while now. When the pilot wrote an article about WTKR suing Suffolk, WTKR plumetted. Some of down fall of WTKR news, is the fact that CBS does not have many interesting shows to watch. There hasn't been in many years. As someone who has been in a management position, if I lost 4 people in a very short peirod of time, my emphasis would be on looking at management. I believe these 4 left because of management.
WTKR
It is no suprise that people are leaving and it is no suprise that the other stations aren't making a big deal. WTKR has tried to make/report news in the National Enquirer mode and has lost credibility with the public.
Pardon my reminiscing
Oh for the good old days when WTAR ruled. Mildred Alexander,Jeff Dane,Paul Hennings,Andy Roberts...
Channel 3 is...
the station that's "taking action"...
maybe it should be the station that's self-destructing?
This is Crazy
That place is in shambles. Barbara Ciara better be plotting her exit. They are either up and quitting or the new guy is clearing house. It may be a little of both. Pricilla Monte and Lisa Godley may have been blessed to be fired from that place. It is a Hot Mess over there.
wtkr...OUCH! (but kudos on the lawsuit!
I want to applaud them for calling out Suffolk for trying to restrict access during the storms and aftermath. I realize some of you non-industry viewers think they were out of line for doing so, but I don't think you're thinking of the big picture. It's not okay (an never can be) for our government to restrict access to public information. Maybe it starts with Suffolk thinking they are protecting something or someone after a storm, but where does it stop? Governments and public agencies have to be accountable for their actions. There has to be transparency for the good of the many.
That being said...
I used to work at WTKR (for 2 years) and have worked in Denver since 2003. I always felt like 'TKR was the Bermuda Triangle of broadcasting. I formed friendships and cared deeply for many of the people there, but alway felt like the roof was going to crash in...as if there were ghosts in the machine. If i
WTKR NEWSROOM
It seems there is a problem of who's is charge of the Newsroom. The head of it? B.C.???????
They are the WJM news
They are the WJM news station, all they are missing is Ted Baxter and Mary Richards.
What Did You Expect?
What did any of us with half a brain expect to happen to WTKR when the foulest "come-here" of all, "The New York Times", bought our former beloved "local" station? I knew it augured ill from the first day it was reported in the Pilot. Years later, my "bad feeling about this" has, sadly, come to pass.
what is the big secret?
Why is it such a secret as to why these people left or were let go? It is a very public position, so it only makes sense the reason would be made public. It makes me think less of the tv station to not know their reason. Something is fishy about that!
I, for one, e-mailed
I, for one, e-mailed everyone that I know after WTKR filed a lawsuit against the City of Suffolk for not allowing access to the damage site. How tasteless? I have not watched a single program on this station since.
Expect to see more . . .
When you're on bottom when it comes to the ratings, people are tossed out the door left and right to try and get the right 'mix' to improve things. Don't be surprised to see a good many more hit the street. It's local TV, baby, and it gets brutal . . .
Falling Apart
They are just falling apart.
