Moments of Grace

The Future Is Rarely What You Think

How many of you can remember what you thought your life might look like when you were in your late teens?  Has it turned out that way?  Probably not.

I want to tell you about a friend of mine who illustrates how suddenly surprising life can be.  Mr. X  had decided to leave the military, and then embarked on a multi-month back-packing trip of Europe. He returned to the US and struggled through several months of attempting to find work.  Things did not go very well.  The last drops of his financial security drained slowly away, and with the economy falling through the floor, each job he got ended almost as quickly as it started as lay-offs commenced. He was living proof of the truism, "last hired, first fired" .  It seemed that no matter where he put his energy, things just wouldn't come together.  He had developed a love for Europe in his travels, and the stark realization that it might be many years before he had the wherewithal to go back there again was a sobering thought.

Fast foward two short months.

My friend is in Germany making exceptionally good money.

How did this happen?  God only knows, and I mean that!  A little birdie whispered a little something about a job in someone's ear, who whispered it in someone else's ear, who finally whispered it into Mr. X's ear, and low and behold, the Vast Universal Carpet of Happy Synchronicity unfolded before him.  Voila!   Only a few short months before it appeared he would face several years of struggle, meager finances, and an American-bound existence, and a matter of weeks turned that whole scenario on its head.

Just when you think you know what's going to happen.....

Absolutely.

Thanks for the reminder. Totally needed that!
