High-speed motorcycle crash on I-64 injures four

Posted to: News

Four people were injured in a high-speed crash involving two motorcycles Sunday afternoon, according to state police.

The accident occurred just after 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 64 east near the Virginia Beach Boulevard overpass, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, state police spokeswoman.

According to Cotten one of the motorcycles was going between 80 and 100 miles per hour when the driver lost control, and the second motorcycle ran into it. Both motorcycles held a driver and a passenger, and all four received injuries not considered life-threatening, Cotten said.

A female passenger was six weeks pregnant, Cotten said.

The driver of the first motorcycle, identified as Thomas O'Malley II of Virginia Beach, was charged with reckless driving, Cotten said.

Three lanes of Interstate 64 East were closed temporarily following the crash.

No real luv for riding

i have an objective view on this subject. first of all i'm on both sides of the coin. i drive a vehicle and i'm a rider. 12yrs to be exact. when i first started riding it was taboo for a woman to ride and it wasn't a big deal when you saw a man riding. i noticed a change when Ruff Ryders came out. people took notice and some people started riding but it only went up a percentage. now it's quadrupled. people are riding left and right however alot of people aren't riding for the luv of it they're riding because there boy or girl is riding. people are treating bike riding as a fad. they're not taking it seriously. in fact some people don't even take a class. they learn on their own or one of their friends teach them which is a big no no. they're doing stunts on open and well populated roads, weaving in and out of traffic and not caring about there safety or others. i don't ride with alot of people because they have no sense. you have these idiots on the road that don't care about themselves or others. i'm not taking sides because there are some idiots in cars that don't pay attention which definitely needs to change because we have to share these roads. i almost hit a biker last month

never seems to amaze me

you know everyone is up here bashing these people for their speeds and what could have been done and what should have been done but none of yall really know what happened, everyone just wants to believe the tabloids and hear say. how bout yall take a look outside the box, and dont bash what you dont know!

On A Personal Note... (Defending Motocyclists)

I am personally involved in this story. She knew she was pregnant and she made the choice to get on that bike. The driver is not the father of the unborn child nor her boyfriend. Nobody was doing excessive speeds of 80mph at the time of the accident when the first biker went down. I can not say what made him go down at this time because it is still under investigation. Speed was not the cause! These bikers look out for you motorists all the time. It is a hobby and transportation. You people should take a look at your odometers next time your on the highway or even local roads like Rosemont(35mph) Motocyclists can't talk on their cell phones, txt, eat, or be distracted by the radio. Their attention is on the road at ALL times. Now there are some crazy riders out there, but these four fortunate people are not like them at all. They all have medical insurance and motocycle insurance, DUH! Who doesn't? Know the whole story before you judge...your time will come sooner or later...

Hard to do a wheelie with a car . . .

I used a motorcycle for years as my primary source of transportation on narrow mountain roads. That is where I learned to ride respectfully of other traffic and to be a safe rider. In all the different places I've lived in, I've never seen such reckless behavior on motorcycles as I've seen around here. Cyclists weaving in and out of traffic at well over 80 MPH; doing wheelies on the freeway scaring the other motorists and nearly causing accidents that way; driving right up the side of the road or between cars when traffic is stalled . . . No, it's not the motorcycle but the drivers who are to blame for their reckless behavior. I'm just surprised there haven't been more such accidents and I pray there won't be.

Cycles are safe!

My Kawasaki 900 Vulcan is my primary form of transportation. Like other cyclists commenting, - biggest danger is distracted (e.g. HANG UP YOUR DAM CELL PHONE) drivers and speed demons who pay no attention to potential hazards coming in from all directions.

Look at it a different way

I hate the comments that has been posted on this web about these two motorcylce I have seen both of the people that were on these bikes ride before. I feel like the people that wrote the comments must dont drive on the same 264 and 64 that I drive on most of you idiots speed crazy in your cars doing like 90 plus and you have the nerve to question us motorcycle riders that we are stupid or idiots. I was riding my bike the other day and this guy pulls up and to me and says bang and points his finger at me in a gun motion. Now you guys say well this mother has no right to be on the bike I think that is (bs) she has no control over the person that has the throttle on these bikes. Most of you voted for bush you should call yourself bad parents look at what he has done to this country.

Everyone's got one

wearing helmets and seat belts?"

Sadly, this same level of knowledge about any given subject resonates on these boards. The same people who think motorcycles have seatbelts tend to have opinions about politics, thus the problem w/ democracy.

No direct offense was meant laura.

WOW

WOW, ignorance never ceases to amaze me…. How many of you people who have replied to this story ride? I wouldn’t be surprised if one of you do. Riding a bike has no bearing on what type of personality or life decisions you make. Would it be the same if this were a car? Hooligans, punks, inane guaranteed behavior?? Give me a break. I would say 8 out of 10 times an accident is caused by a car not paying attention, txting, talking on your phone, reading a book. Every day I ride to work, you would be amazed at what people are doing in their cars instead of paying attention to the road. Ask any biker, rocket or cruiser WE are 100x more aware of what’s going on around us on a bike than you will ever be in your car. What was the cause of the accident? Was it speed? Take a look at your speedometer next time you’re going with the flow of traffic. I bet you will find it was close to the speed these guys were going. I am not defendi

What a treat it was yesterday afternoon to be stuck on the

Interstate after 3 lanes of traffic were closed down - for what seemed like forever - because of the riders absolutely inane guaranteed behavior once they climb onto those rice rockets. I'd like to see what they look like this morning; I can only imagine how many layers of skin they are missing.

And you know, just once, it would be nice to see the city and state police shut down the interstate after a major accident like that. No, instead they just continue to allow traffic to attempt to get on the highway creating even more of a traffic nightmare with traffic backing up on feeder roads, when they could just as easily shut it down, divert the traffic and people wouldn't waste money (the cost of gas) sitting stuck forever while all stuck traffic merges from 4 lanes to 1.

Common sense on all fronts seems to be missing in Hampton Roads.

Seat Belts?

On a motorcycle??

Where they...

wearing helmets and seat belts?

Here we go again

I guess those cyclist did not bother to read the article about these bikes with the comments that were added a few weeks ago. It is sad, but unfortunately, some people have no common sense. They have the attitude, "It's not going to happen to me." Well, it does.

Motorcycles crash

I've seen several motorcycles doing a "wheelie", front wheel off the road speeds excess +80 mph. All of those motorcycles have taken Brambleton Avenue exit & go to 7-11 next to NSU, which seem to be motorcyclist "hang-out". They are lucky that they are still alive.

High Speed Cycles

You see groups of them weaving in and out of traffic especially on 264 - it's wonder that they are killed or maimed. Anyone who is 6 weeks pregnant and rides as passenger must have a death wish...it's hard to have sympathy when they are riding like maniacs.
Where are state police when you need them...I know they would like to get them off of the roads, too. Can't be everywhere at once.
Watch for them Sunday evenings heading back toward Brambleton ave.

How insightful

Thanks Ethan for clearing up the fact that there are no locals, I mean non-hood locals, who drive irresponsibly. I'll sleep better now. Regardless of employment, or gang relationships, four people had better take a closer look at their choices, and they might want to look up and give a nod for a second chance.

hold on a moment....

I am the biggest critic you will ever see in reference to motorcyclists that ride like idiots and get themselves and others hurt on the highways of Hampton Roads. But, as I have begged the Pilot in previous articles like this, print the ages involved (which they have if they have their identities) and what type of bike they were riding. In reference to the passenger, she may have been beating the heck out of the guy twisting the throttle trying to get him to slow down. So let's get all the info before we start attacking her judgement as a person/future mother. The problem is we can't get all the info unless the initial supplier of parts and pieces of the story publishes all the details.

RECKLESS HOOLIGANS

I see these punks on the freeway all the time, who will pay for the medical services? The police time? The law abiding motorist inconvenience? If I ever see any of these punks speeding ahead, and wind up crashing, I will drive right by.

Cry me a tear!

I have no sympathy for these bozos. 6 months pregnant, I can only imagine what type of mother she's going to be and what type of kid she's going to raise.

A lesson for all the motorcycle riders out there

Hmmm . . . speeding on a motorcycle on the freeway and you have an accident. This shouldn't be surprise to anyone. The only things that are surprising are that no one was killed and that there haven't been more such accidents. The woman who is pregnant riding a cycle at those speeds? She has as much sense as a woman who drinks heavily or takes drugs while pregnant. Pray tell she turns out to be a better mother than what sense she showed today . . .
