KFC Canada, Butterball to change slaughter methods, PETA says

NORFOLK

PETA has announced two North American victories in its campaign to switch to more humane killings of animals.

Kentucky Fried Chicken in Canada and Butterball LLC, a U.S. turkey producer, will move toward what People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals calls "the least cruel form of poultry slaughter ever developed." Smithfield Foods Inc. has a 49 percent stake in Butterball.

Matt Prescott, the assistant director of corporate affairs for the animal rights group, called the agreement with KFC in Canada "the biggest victory for farmed animals with regard to corporate policy that's ever been had by PETA."

Under the agreement, signed with Norfolk-based PETA last month, KFC agreed to phase in over the next eight years the use of "controlled-atmosphere killing" for all of its chickens.

In that method, the chickens undergo a relatively painless death, breathing inert gases such as argon or nitrogen. That, Prescott said, is far less painful than current methods, which often involve "cutting their throats open while conscious and running them through a tank of scalding hot water."

In addition, KFC will offer a vegan alternative on its Canadian menus, starting this summer, Prescott said. "Customers of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Canada will have a completely cruelty-free option, " he said.

PETA has urged Kentucky Fried Chicken in the United States to do the same, but with no luck, he said. In a statement Monday, Kentucky Fried Chicken said, "We look forward to learning whether our Canadian franchisees' action has any positive benefit on the humane treatment of poultry."

In March, PETA submitted a shareholder resolution for Smithfield's annual meeting asking it to consider controlled-atmosphere killing for Butterball turkeys.

Smithfield asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for permission to exclude the resolution from its proxy. It argued that it did not have authority to do what PETA wanted because it did not have majority control of Butterball.

PETA disagreed with Smithfield's logic but withdrew its resolution in May.

Prescott said Monday that PETA learned from "restaurant and grocery industry sources" that Butterball planned to open a controlled-atmosphere-killing plant next year. A statement Monday from Butterball made no promise to move toward controlled-atmosphere killing, saying it would "continue to monitor research."

PETA

Obviously its thefat, ignorant, overweight Americans who feel there is no need for animal compasion. I applaud PETA from the bottom of my heart for the work they do!!!

They need to worry more

They need to worry more about human rights instead of animals

The Only Good Thing...

..about PETA being in Norfolk, is the Stripe Bass I catch, knock in the head and eat from around their building.....

Everbody at PETA needs to

Everbody at PETA needs to get a real job!

Just goes to show you

There will always be some "manly" neanderthal who've obviously failed nutrition class in school who will feel the need to beat his chest and complain any time anyone tries to make his food supply more ethical, safer or sustainable. Relax Michael, nobody's going to force you to eat your fruits and vegetables or stop you from gorging on bacon double cheeseburgers and wings to your clogged arterial heart's delight.

A local employer did something good; you might not like to hear something positive, but just because its not gloom and doom doesn't mean its not news.

Congratulations PeTA.

Protein.....

Protein comes from far more sources then meat. Additionally, PETA has resigned itself to the fact that meat food sources will exist, which is why they are generally content in simply ensuring that the animals that are killed for food are humanely handled.

Facts mixed up

PETA did not dispose of animals in a dumpster. PETA is not in the business of handling corpses or the direct care of animals. I believe you are referring to an incident where a couple of MEMBERS of PETA improperly disposed of bodies of animals for a shelter or veternarian. They were not acting under the orders of PETA whatsoever, however, the reporters felt it neccessary to include that fact, and then people like yourself automatically jumped to the fallacy of combining the two. If you are going to bang on something, at least get the facts straight.

Who cares?

As long as they keep killin em so we can eat, I could care less how.
People Eating Tasty Animals
People Embarassing Tidewater Area
Pretty Energetic Totally Asine

Great news!

PETA deserves a lot of credit for pulling this off. Because KFC is such a huge consumer of chickens, this change will cause a ripple effect throughout the industry. If you've ever watched undercover footage taken at slaughterhouses that supply KFC (you can view them on PETA's Web site), you will realize how much horrific abuse will be eliminated by changing to gassing chickens instead of yanking them out of their transport cages, slamming their feet into shackles, slitting their throats, and dunking them into vats of scalding water. Undercover videos show workers punching, kicking, stomping on, and otherwise intentionally abusing chickens at slaughterhouses. All of that will be eliminated. Good job, PETA.

Same Here

I wish I had a "polite" peta remark too. When will idiots like peta get over it? Remember: these are the same people who will happily throw animals into dumpsters (I think it was in NC not too long ago). These are the same people who will try to strong-arm you into giving up protein (comes from meat). I don't understand how this rubbish could be considered news. Guess when I get my paycheck, it's off to KFC for dinner ;)
