Maintenance darkens feeds from some highway traffic cameras

Posted to: News Transportation and Traffic

Commuters may have trouble checking traffic by way of cameras placed along the sides of the interstates.

Maintenance being performed could affect the feed from the Virginia Department of Transportation's cameras carried by TrafficLand, according to an alert on TrafficLand's Web site.

The feed is carried by Web sites, including PilotOnline.com. Not all of the camera feeds are affected.

Normal service is expected to be restored no later than tomorrow, the message on TrafficLand's site says.

I, for one, find those cameras invaluable for avoiding backups at HRBT and other places on the our interstate system. I live in Norfolk, work in Va Beach, and frequently go to Hampton. For example, I turn to Norfolk's Channel 46 before leaving for Hampton and find out how far it's backed up. I then leave, get off 64 just before the backup and use side roads to reach 4th View. the HRBT can be backed up to Chesapeake Blvd, yet I still get to Hampton in less than 1/2 hour. Those things have probably saved me quite a bit of gas and aggravation...Now, if I could only see them in my car. Maybe my next one will.

Are these cameras really worth the huge price to taxpayers?

I'm sure, like me, many taxpayers would like to know the dollar figure that this camera system is costing us in our transportation funds. It's programs like the camera system, that provide little or no benefit other than to the local media, that cause our road funds to be inadequate to provide for proper maintenance and improvements. Many people may think that this is just a minor cost and would make little difference in our fund shortage. Think in more detail about it. There is the initial design, material, equipment and installation cost. Then there is the maintenance and upkeep cost. Then the cost of observing and monitoring. This would have to be a huge hit to our tax dollars with little to no value.
