SUFFOLK
Rasheed Brown was the eldest of five people who approached a single man on Spruce Street last November. They threatened him with a gun and assaulted him.
On Wednesday, Brown, 18, pleaded guilty to adult participation in a juvenile gang. Additional charges of misdemeanor assault and brandishing a firearm will not be prosecuted under the agreement, Circuit Judge Westbrook Parker said.
Brown could face up to two years in prison for his gang participation, said prosecutor Jim Wiser. Three juveniles have been sentenced for the incident, Wiser said, including Darrien Robinson, who was sentenced as an adult under a similar plea agreement.
Wiser said Brown and his associates were members of the Cypress Manor Posse and were out to seek revenge against the rival Lake Kennedy Posse after being insulted. He said the two gangs were suspected of being affiliated with the national gangs the Crips and the Bloods.
"It was a show of strength," Wiser said. "They were trying to retaliate for a previous show of disrespect."
The Suffolk commonwealth's attorney's office has won numerous convictions for gang participation in the past several months.
Brown will be sentenced on Sept. 4.
