PORTSMOUTH

A 19-year-old Navy man accused of deliberately causing burns to his girlfriend’s baby has been taken into custody after his release from a medical facility on Monday, according to police.

Matthew Alan Simon, of Sandra Lane, faces charges of attempted murder, felony child abuse and malicious wounding, police said.

Simon was taking care of his girlfriend’s 8-month-old girl on May 27 when she was burned on her arms, hands, legs and feet, police said.

According to a police officer’s probable cause summary filed in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Simon said he ran a bath and got in it with her.

According to the summary, Simon said the child cried in pain and that while drying her off, he noticed the burns.

Simon was scheduled to be arraigned last Friday but had not been released from the psychiatric ward at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, according to information that came out in court that day.

He was arraigned in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on Tuesday morning and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.
