NORFOLK

A man and woman were killed early Wednesday in what police called an apparent murder and suicide in the Moton Circle neighborhood.

Dispatchers got a call about 8:50 a.m. reporting that shots had been fired. Officers headed to the 2500 block of Jamaica Ave., where they found Reginald Kemp, 22, and Kanika Wood, 23, shot inside a home. Both were pronounced dead by Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

Wood lived in the home; Kemp lived in the 1600 block of Hunter St., said Karen Parker-Chesson, Norfolk police spokeswoman.

Police said it appeared that Kemp shot Wood and then turned the gun on himself.

“There was an infant inside. The infant is now in the care of relatives,” Parker-Chesson said. The baby wasn’t hurt, she said.

Investigators studied the scene while neighbors and family waited nearby. Police did not say what might have motivated the gunfire.

At a nearby apartment, Tiffany Robinson said Wood had lived in the neighborhood a long time and was well known there.

“She was a sweet girl who had no problems with nobody,” Robinson said. “She stayed in the house. It’s sad.”

Kia Thomas nodded in agreement. “It’s crazy,” she said. “We see her every day.”
