COROLLA, N.C.
A man apparently drowned Friday afternoon after struggling in the ocean near Pine Island on the Currituck Outer Banks.
He was swimming when lifeguards saw him begin to struggle in the water at about 2:40 p.m., said Randall Edwards, Currituck County spokesman.
Corolla Ocean Rescue pulled him from the water and began performing CPR, Edwards said. An emergency medical service unit arrived on the scene a few minutes later, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The man’s identity was withheld pending family notification.
