A Smithfield man charged with abducting his girlfriend and setting her genital area on fire was sentenced Wednesday to 12 months in jail. Milton Mizell Jr. spread hair gel on his girlfriend and lit the gel on fire last August after the two argued.

Mizell, his lawyer said in court, thought the woman had sex with another man the night before. Mizell held her in her Suffolk apartment until she ran outside naked and screaming.

Circuit Court Judge Westbrook Parker suspended all but 12 months of an original five-year sentence. Mizell was charged with unlawful wounding and abduction.

Mizell was also ordered to submit to counseling, and he’ll be on probation after he serves his sentence.
