A man who was pulled from the surf Friday in Corolla has been identified.

Efforts to revive Darrell Pepper, 64, of Brownsville, Pa., were unsuccessful after lifeguards pulled him from the ocean near the Pine Island neighborhood of Corolla, said Currituck County spokesman Randall Edwards.

He was swimming when lifeguards saw him begin to struggle in the water at about 2:40 p.m.

At the time, officials did not release his identity. Drowning has not been determined as the cause of death, Edwards said. An autopsy is being done.
