Motorcyclist killed after eluding police in York County

A motorcyclist, who hit the gas rather than stop for police in York County, was killed early today when he lost control and crashed, State Police said.

Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a State Police spokeswoman, identified the victim as Dustin Joe Barrack, 22, of the 300 block of Yorktown Road.

Cotten said an officer with the York-Poquoson Police Department had attempted to stop a Yamaha motorcycle about 2:15 a.m. after seeing it go through a red light.

Instead of halting, the cyclist sped off, she said.

Moments later, police found the cycle wrecked at the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Bailey Road.

Barrack, who was wearing a helmet that is not approved by the Virginia Department of Transportation, had been thrown from the motorcycle and was killed on impact, Cotten said.

While speed was considered a factor in the crash, Cotten said it was not immediately known if alcohol played a role.
