Old Dominion reached into the junior college ranks for the first time Thursday. Offensive lineman Logo Maluia and tight end Matt Carillo will join the Monarchs this fall as scholarship players.
ODU is building a Division I-AA football program that will begin play in 2009. Players will use the coming fall as a redshirt year.
Maluia, a 6-foot-3, 295-pounder, played last season for San Mateo in California. Carillo played at Mount San Antonio, also in California, and had 11 catches last season. But ODU coach Bobby Wilder said the 6-3, 250-pound Carillo played in a run-oriented offensive scheme.
"We expect them to be two-year starters for us," Wilder said. "Both fit our system."
