NORFOLK
Organizers of a Town Point Park festival ordered a performer off stage and pressed charges against him Saturday night after they say he used profanity twice within a two-minute period.
The action came more than a month after a number of downtown residents said they heard offensive language during the park’s Afr’Am Fest over Memorial Day weekend.
The Bayou Boogaloo and Cajun Food Festival was winding down around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when Festevents Executive Director Karen Scherberger said she heard a performer use a profanity while introducing band members. Scherberger said she immediately made contact with the stage manager who motioned the singer off the stage. The band was allowed to finish the song before the concert was shut down, she said.
Foul language is “not something we tolerate at any of our events,” Scherberger said. “There are families here. It’s so inappropriate.”
Festevents, which organizes the Town Point Park festivals, posted an apology on its Web site saying it regretted “our guests were exposed to profanity ... the musician responsible has been charged with abusive language by the Norfolk Police Department.”
She said the performer, Boots Riley, was cooperative and left the park following the alleged incident. Riley was a guest of the band Galactic, described as an instrumental act on its Web site.

Because of Afram
Because of the Afram fest the City and Karen are paying more attention to what goes on on these stages. Karen is just doing her job. Not all of us want to hear the filth we hear in a lot of todays music. That type of entertainment does not belong in a family-friendly enviroment.
Was he given a warning?
I think a warning would be efficient. If the performer cursed again, I think it would be fair to ask him to leave the stage. I don't really understand the new profanity issue in Norfolk though. Is this only for the Waterside area or what? What about other music venues? What about street corners, businesses, and restaurants? I understand that some people are offended by foul language- especially when there are children present, but whatever happened to freedom of speech? If a song is "F* this" and "F* that" I may be more concerned, but this was just one word. And what about all the people who play loud music that contains offensive language? I get to hear lyrics containing curse words and music degrading women everyday when I'm driving next to others. Where do you draw the line?
When Norfolk Attacks....
Apparently Ms. Scherberger assumed that everyone would be happy by playing the role of a Catholic nun and slapping someone upside the head with the ruler. In her comments quoted in the other version of this story, it makes it apparent that she's never been to a show at Town Point Park, and she only went in order to make an example of someone at the first utterance. Her expanding to say that she's "banished" Galactic from ever playing at a Festevents event ever again is ridiculous. They've played two other events at least. She had no fault with their performance then, but post-Afraam, it's suddenly a moral imperative. Shame on you Ms. Scherberger for your lack of tact and restraint. When you decide to suddenly enforce a policy that people haven't been subject to in years, it's only proper to WARN them first, and then follow that up with kicking them off stage or out after the second. What exactly IS an "embellishment of the F-word" anyway?
He belongs arrested
If he doesn't have enough sense then to use profanity in front of children and families he should be arrested. Using profanity in public is an offense.
Just because a lot of readers who post here have no morals and their minds in the gutter, doesn't mean everyone that post here is a gutter rat.
they filed CHARGES?!?!?!
what year is this? seriously. this sort of thing is to be expected when you live so close to Pat Robertson and his like-minded right wing nut jobs.
when you're looking to go to a decent concert this summer and you realize there are none.....look back on this incident for your answer.
Great reporting!
1. The artist is not identified until the last paragraph of the story.
2. The article doesn't even tell us what was said.
It's a safe bet that Galactic, which was about the only thing keeping this festival alive, will never come back. And you thought Haborfest was on life support!
Not surprised at most of the comments here. . .so expected. .
When the same article was written about AmFram for the same incident, people were so quick to dog the event, saying all kinds of negative things about it. Now, at this event for the same thing, people want to dismiss the incident and make references to any and everything else. I wonder why that is. . .funny!
The biggest problem with
The biggest problem with all of the downtown festivals coninues to be the way they close them down. One minute its a party and evryone's having a good time, the next they are on the P.A.s insisting everyone leave the area immediately. Hundreds of drunks surge into Downtown Norfolk causing all sorts of problems. What about "soft endings" where people are allowed to wander back to the cars over the period of an hour or so? It would make a lot less impact on the Downtown area.
no way!!
I guess they'll never invite George Carlin to do his 7 dirty word skit...
This is so stupid.....
I am sure I have heard worse from the junior high school kids getting off the bus in the afternoon. Again, as usual, fighting the symptom instead of the problem. In fact, I know I heard worse from the Norfolk Police in passing.
If the language ain't fit
you must quit!
Past due
It is long past due that this sort of behavior was reined in. First Amendment rights be danged: there has to be a level of acceptable language and behavior, even if it does bring up a major argument about the Amendment. Perhaps it is time we revisited the issue. And I agree with the poster about the issue of the slime being played loudly from cars: a mother I know had stopped at a light and her kids were exposed to it, one even asked her what some of those words mean! It's time we set standards and got people to act like adults instead of children on the grade school playground.
Somebody drew a line in the quicksand
In a world riddled with never ending chaos and filth someone has finally blown the whistle and called a foul. I might ask the referee where he's been the past twenty years. Put a W in the column for decency. But, were still losing, down by thirty points in the fourth quarter. Yet there's still hope.
So, Basically . . . .
Basically it was Festevents wanting to make a show of decency; they wanted to make an example of the "Word Criminal." I'll bet they were anxiously awaiting the opportunity to do so. Did they warn hjim before having him arrested, I wonder? The story indicates not.
If the words are sooo bad, then why aren't individuals who use them in public arrested. Ooops! That tricky little old First Amendment. I'll again bet that the person uttering such harmful wrds gets of on that pesky little First Amendment thing.
If they were so interested in clean family fun, it would make me wonder if they had covered this in their briefings to the bands and other performers. I'll wager not. Will I be arrested for betting in my comments section? I'd not put it past the city of Norfolk to have that done to me, merely as an example to the rest of you.
Hypocrites, perhaps?
Typical
Why not? I mean if they film girls gone wild in town point park, why not the rest of the lewd stuff that norfolk wants to be famous for?
Great
I wish the police would enforce this law in parking lots with loud car stereo's blaring this crap. Probably worse than whatever this cat said. I wonder do you have to complain first? Like a citizen arrest deal.
!?!?
My friend said he was interested in the fest but was bummed because "Galactic" wasn't going to be there (he said he had seen them before). Guess he didn't find a proper copy of the schedule, because it sounded like he looked. I guess all shows at town point park will be rated G.
Get over it
Honestly. An entire concert was shut down because one of the performers uttered a 4 letter word on stage? When did Towne Pointe Park become your church? If there is anyone who was in that crowd and never heard a curse word before, they need to get out of the house more often. You people rank right up there with the city of Virginia Beach trying to censor what people say walking down the street. I have one question for the lot of you.
Have you ever heard of the F***ing First Amendment?
