bLetters to the Editor

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog, bLetters to the Editor. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Perils on the left

Never in my life have I witnessed more drivers utilizing the left lane for cruising rather than passing than in Hampton Roads. They are causing accidents and slowing down traffic.

Terri Adams
Chesapeake

Are we the world's rudest drivers?

I think we might be! D.C. drives faster, but more consistently. Not too many cars going 55 in the far left lanes of the Beltway.

I pretty much just desire to stay out of harm's way on our roads. Not sure what to do when I am in the *right* lane, going 55, and someone rides up behind me flashing their lights and tailgating. I generally slow down somewhat so they will get the clue to use the passing lane, because I have found the aggressive folks will not get off your tail just because you increase your speed to 70! And that is dangerous!

The one thing I repeat to myself when the "self-proclaimed sheriffs" get out there trying to teach other drivers a "lesson" is "God didn't create *you* with the mission to punish *me.*" If their arrogance extends to trying to re-educate everyone on the roads to their own preferred way of driving, they are way out of line! Sincerely, Mary G. Martin

The law

This statute says that if you are in the left lane and abreast(side by side)with another car, which means that you are effectively doing a rolling road block, the car in the left lane is required to move into the right lane as quickly as is safely possible to allow the vehicle behind you in the left lane to pass when signaling by horn or lights that they want to pass you. If you are in the left lane and there is no car in the right lane, the law does not say that you are required by law to move over. The law only says that you should not do a rolling roadblock (two cars abreast going down the road)if someone wants to pass in the left lane.

Here is the Virginia Statute

§ 46.2-842.1. Drivers to give way to certain overtaking vehicles on divided highways.

It shall be unlawful to fail to give way to overtaking traffic when driving a motor vehicle to the left and abreast of another motor vehicle on a divided highway. On audible or light signal, the driver of the overtaken vehicle shall move to the right to allow the overtaking vehicle to pass as soon as the overtaken vehicle can safely do so. A violation of this section shall not be construed as negligence per se in any civil action.

(1989, c. 708, § 46.1-211.1.)

I DONT CARE FWM

I dont care what lane your in if your in my way I will go around you simple as that..When its safe...Some people like to think it is their superior better than you attitude that needs to teach me to slow down... some very intellectual people like to slam on their breaks whitch ain't to smart because when I get around you I just might see if your breaks and your reaction time are equel to your arrogance...IF you want to play then lets play.. well let the courts pick a winner....YOU DONT NO WHO YOUR DEALING WITH ON THE ROADS WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PISS SOMEONE OFF YOU DONT NO...ITS kind of like walking up to a bear and slaping it..sounds stupid dont it

TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT

Let's all try a new concept and it is called obeying the all traffic laws not just the ones we deem convient to us. Most any day of the week you will find in anyone of our I-64 or I-264,I-664,I-564 people who have no concept of what a speed limit is or something called road courtesy. Heck people most here in Va have forgotten whst that thing on the left side of the steering wheel is and what it is supposed to be used for. YES that's right it is called a TURN SIGNEL, by law you are required to use it when entering or exiting any lane, road or intersection to inform those around you of your intentions. Let's start with this simple one then maybe just maybe we can graduate up to figuring that there are more than to speeds on a car super slow and super fast. Both of these are traffic hazards folks. Time to follow all the traffic laws.

Max speed

If I'm driving the speed limit, I can drive in any lane I want. No one should be passing me. You wonder why gas is going up, it's because of the morons wasting it driving 70-80 mph in a 55 zone. Simple law of supply and demand. Prices will continue to go up until demand drops.

Ralen4

Try driving in NC. I find that NC interstate drivers are extremely courteous. I was shocked.

charlesm

Obviously, when the roads are congested it doesn't really matter what lane you're in. You're not gonna get anywhere fast. But there actually is a code in VA's laws that address this topic.

Code 46.2-804(1)

Hopefully this helps. Besides, it's common sense to get out of the way.

driving in the left lane

Where in the law does is say that you can only drive in the left lane to pass another vehicle? With the congested roads you must be joking.

perfect letter

I have been thinking about writing a letter to the editor about this very same thing. I absolutely hate it when someone is just cruising down the highway at 60 mph in the left lane. I don't care if you're going 100mph, you better move over if someone is ready to pass you.

Comment

From the Virginia Drivers Manual: "If you are traveling slower than the traffic around you on a multi-lane highway, drive in the right-hand lane." Notice this does not say anything about speed limits. How do you know if you're driving slower than the traffic around you? If you are getting passed by someone in the right lane, guess what, YOU ARE SLOWER! It does not matter if you are going the speed limit or not...not your job to enforce those. If that's what you want to do, go down and join the police; they can use the help.

Comment

The South in general, and this area in particular, suffer from that ignorance. I can only conclude it is not taught in driver education classes in this area; it certainly is not enforced.
