Police are investigating an overnight slaying in which a 50-year-old man was shot while sitting in a vehicle.

Officer Harold Eley, a police spokesman, said that just before 1 a.m. today, police received a 911 call reporting that someone had been shot while sitting in a pickup truck at the intersection of Bellwood Road and Jefferson Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found David Allen Hedgepeth of the first block of Dean Ray Court suffering from a gunshot wound to his left side, Eley said.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at 2:08 am.

Eley said a witness told police that a a 39-year-old Newport News woman and Hedgepeth were in the pickup at Bellwood Road and Tyler Avenue when someone approached and robbed the man. The gunman then shot him.

The wounded victim then drove the truck to Bellwood and Jefferson where he he collapsed.

The witness, an acquaintance of the victim, told investigators they had been "in the area attempting to purchase drugs," Eley said.

The gunman is described as black with a dark complexion, in his early 20s, with a thin build and clean shaven with close cut hair.

Police continued to canvas the area this morning seeking additional witnesses or people with information that might help identify the gunman.

Police later released a composite sketch of the gunman.
