PORTSMOUTH
Police checkpoints on both sides of the Hodges Ferry Bridge resulted in 17 arrests and 68 traffic tickets by Portsmouth and Chesapeake police Friday night.
The roadblocks were aimed at drunken drivers and those not wearing seat belts, Portsmouth police reported. Arrests also were made on drug charges and outstanding warrants, and Chesapeake police recovered one stolen gun.
A grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles funded the joint operation.

"I'd have told them to buzz off..."
LOL! I'd pay to see that!
Seriously...it's a public safety issue and the police do this all over. If you aren't impaired, no harm no foul. If you are impared, you are a danger to yourself and others!
Also...re Rose's comments...I too would like to know what's going on with Meghan Landowski's case. Many people would. A nice 16 year old girl was brutally murdered in her own home in broad daylight. When will Meghan and her family see justice?
Where's blotto?
Can you spot the drunks on this page?
We need to take more of these lowlifes off the street.
Bottle-induced paranoia doesn't worry me much. I think we can live with these checkpoints without serious threat to the republic.
An action that causes an equal and opposite reaction...
Drink and drive
Carry stolen guns in your car
Have illicit drugs in your car
Don't buckle up
What don't you understand about bad behavior and consequences?
when did we become like the
when did we become like the berlin wall?
I'm all for it!
Where do I send my donation to make sure this continues throughout the city of Portsmouth?
Great job and great collaboration between the two cities!
Bad boy, bad boy, whatcha gonna do?
checkpoints....
Checkpoints are legal as long as they stop every car, or every second car, third car....you get it. The information that wasn't published was of the arrests and tickets, how many were for the intended drivers? My experience bets that only a fraction of them were for DUI's. While they are taking time to set up all the cones, lights and signs, word is getting out all over town at the locations that are serving the people they are hunting. As a former officer in a local jurisdiction, I can tell you that checkpoints are there for the show. Pilot, let's see the results.....Inquiring minds would like to know.
those not wearing seatbelts?
What if they weren't? Being stopped by a roadblock isn't a primary offense.
Had they asked me to buckle up, I would've told them to buzz off...
sorry I disagree
Checkpoints?? you mean like you see in the old war movies "your papers! where are your papers!" I thought you had to exhibit a "cause" to be stopped and questioned. Watch out what you approve of folks. I'm a law and order guy but don't care for this at all.
Keep up the great work!
Any one of those drunks may taken innocent lives!
And they still can't find who killed Meghan Landowski?
WOW! That's all well and good, but I'd like to hear that they have solved who killed Meghan or come out and warn the public that there is a vicious killer running loose. We have heard nothing from the police or the press. Why is that? If the police do not have a clue who did it, then maybe they should be alerting the public to remain on watch because a killer is running loose.
