Severe heat may have buckled roadway on I-64 in Norfolk

Posted to: News Norfolk Traffic - Transportation

NORFOLK

Traffic on Interstate 64 backed up at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday after a portion of the roadway apparently buckled, leading to a motorcycle crash in the vicinity of 4th View Street.

A "pavement failure" occurred that might have been heat-related, and the Virginia Department of Transportation made repairs.

Repairs were finished and all lanes open by 7:20 p.m., VDOT said.

Motorists were urged to use alternate routes, such as Interstate 664 to the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.

Sgt. Michelle Cotton, a spokeswoman for the State Police, said a Chevrolet Suburban headed west braked because of the roadway problems, and a motorcyclist behind it apparently didn't have time to stop and wound up sliding on the road, causing a minor injury.

The motorcyclist was taken to Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center.

VDOT's Lauren Hansen said motorists headed west were proceeding around the affected area in a single lane, normally used to approach the 4th View Street exit. The eastbound lanes were not affected by the road buckling, Cotton said.

However, traffic slowed as people looked over to the westbound lanes to see what was happening, leading to backups.

There was a separate four-vehicle collision in the Mason Creek area in the eastbound lanes, she said.

Ira

You seem to be pretty upset about a topic as trivial as tempature. Maybe all that "heat" down in Florida fried your brain.

Um

In all fairness, I actually lived there. I hope you enjoyed your trip but please look up the items I provided for Skoops. Humidity? More than Dade? Puhleez. I have seen it so hot in the fall there that answering the front door caused sweat. How can you guys debate reality? Does anyone understand convection and latitudes? Can you all find Miami on a map?

Ira, here's my two cents

I've been to St. Pete's Beach, Miami, Clairmont, Orlando, Pompano Beach, Florida City, and other areas of Florida. Never has it been hotter there than here. The key factor is humidity. Yes, Florida gets that as well, but I've never had a 1-2 punch delivery of high heat and humidity like it can do in the Hampton Roads to Georgia areas. However, if I am TRULY missing out on real heat, I guess I"m better for it.

Ps.

Look up what a Hadley Cell is. Understand the concept of convection. Horse latitudes? Under your reasoning, Central America should be really cool in the summer. Did you notice that this region is located on the coast? Literally surrounded by water. Too funny.

Skoops

I try to give you room, but your wrong. As an ex-resident of South Florida, I can attest that you don't even know what hot is. Sure, it's warm all year around, but the summers are brutal. Even if you go into SC and Georgia you experience sub tropical tempatures. Your comment is not based in reality. After moving to this area I noticed that it was not even what I considered to be warm until mid June to the start of July.

Only on these boards could someone try to say that Va is hotter than Miami. I am hoping you begin a debate that humans do not need oxygen to exist and then try it.

South FL

As far as South FL goes, it was 85 there on Saturday and 103 here. It gets hot in HR in the summer, very hot. Our central eastern location causes us to get the very hot wind currents from the west that in turn pulls moisture back off the bay and ocean causing the humidity you don’t see in other areas... South FL has a constant water breeze either from the west, east or south. Sorry it might stay warmer longer there but our summers CAN be much more intense.

Idiotic

So, under this theory driving would be impossible in South Florida? Right? Stupid. People here don't even understand what hot is.

Speedbumps are awful!

I ride a motorcycle (on the back, though) and there are such pronounced "speed bumps" on Rt. 264 and Rt. 64 here, that when we hit them going 55 mph, it hurts the base of my brain, spine and hips. I am getting so used to it, that I can anticipate when we approach them and try to brace myself for the impact. It's usually right before or after the overpasses. What in the world is VDOT thinking that this is not a hazard in of itself, not to mention what ever happened in yesterday's accident.

Pot holes and speed bumps

Between the potholes and "asphalt speed bumps" things are dangerous on any highway around here. I lived in South Florida for 19 years and never saw a highway "buckle" under the intense heat and sun. The thing that caused this is poor maintenance. I drive by that spot every morning and you can see large chunks of concrete sitting next to the road right beside the huge hole (it's gone now of course).

Hey VDOT if you're reading this how about grinding down the "asphalt speed bump" on the entrance merge lane on west bound 264 at Rosemont Road. This "speed bump" goes all the way across the highway, but is worse at the entrance ramp and outside lane.
