Smart start

Go ahead, sleep in.

That could be a welcome message sent to Williamsburg-area high school students if a practical - and simple - change in schedules is implemented soon on the Peninsula.

Odds are, it won't happen. Other districts have tried and been met with a deafening cacaphony from those who think babysitting, sports and fast-food jobs trump academics. (Those would be parents. And coaches.)

Still, It's refreshing to see educators seriously exploring ways to improve academic performance. So kudos to administrators in the Williamsburg James City County school district who want to start high school later than 7:20 a.m., the outrageous start time that's in place now.

According to a report in The Virginia Gazette, school officials want to open the doors at a more reasonable 9 a.m. instead.

Anyone who lives with teenagers knows that their biological clocks are set to go off late in the morning. (10 o'clock is probably the perfect time to start school, but let's not push it.) Nevertheless, most schools order drowsy students to class just after dawn, with unimpressive results.

It will be interesting to see if Williamsburg's plan to put learning first is ever implemented.

I'm betting it won't.

Too many people will be ticked off. Football and fast-food come first, you know.

"Quit coddling these kids

"Quit coddling these kids and place demands on them"

I agree. It is time to STOP pandering to the wants of these kids. No wonder they think they own the world..They do by what we are teaching them. Yea, lets make them believe they are sooo important as to not have to get up to do things and can lounge around, stay up late playing games, hang out etc etc...do not worry..we grownups will figure a way to appease the mass teens that feel like it is their due to sleep late..

Get real...as someone said, we have been learning for hundreds of years and we still managed to survive and become a better person for it..

How about something called self discipline and responsibilites?? Hello?? Are we not asking these kids to become responsible? No wonder we have all these kids out there retaliating with guns and violence over a "diss"" or a "snub"..parents and the schools are teaching our kids it is their right to do as they please anymore and in their mind shooting another is just another right you gave them by pandering to there WANTS..not NEEDS! It is called BOUNDERIES!

A different view

Bank or office jobs I think start their days at 8:oo or 9:00 most service type jobs which most young adults work start their days earlier..most goverment type service members starts befor 6 or 7 am ..then there are the jobs that run three shifts..my point is we all would love to stay in bed all morning every day but gotta eat gotta work so get the #@$%$# up I have too you have too unless you like takeing handouts My mood is this way becausw I have a lazzzzy 18yr old wanting everything but not wanting to work for it EARLY to BED EARLY TO RISE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM no any more

I side with you on this one Kerry.

If we slide the start of the school day back forty minutes, we would probably see an improvement and that's not cutting into the after school activities time that much. It would also be wise to add fifteen minutes to the school day and have the school year begin after Labor Day and end the last day BEFORE Memorial Day. This would be a huge savings on bus fuel and energy cost for buildings. It seems my kids schools stop any meaningful learning three weeks before the end of the school year anyway. Let's put some common sense in with the book sense and start making right choices to educate our young people. Another issue to look at is, why not make it possible for the more advanced Juniors and Seniors to have the option of attending community college for their English, History, Government, Science and Math courses. This will help save the students and parents huge funds in college cost and be more challenging for the more advanced students. Let's get smart in the way we operate our schools.

One of my pet peeves

I'm with you, Kerry. The studies on adolescent sleep needs have been publicized for quite a while. Somehow Chesapeake manages a later high school start time, yet no other divisions can manage it.

It is ridiculous. Those ultra-important jobs are usually to feed the cars the teens must have. It's a vicious cycle. Teens have to work more hours with the high gas prices.

This region could cooperate and implement later school start times. What an example of regional cooperation that would be! Yet it won't happen. It's like beating one's head against a wall. The school systems simply don't care.

Wrong track...

Instead of having school regulations that set curfews and govern dress codes, hairstyles, student employment, and even leisure activities, we worry over how we start school too early. Instead of worrying over delinquency, school violence, and bullying we focus on lesser important items. Normally Kerry, I agree often with you, but not on this.

Ouch!

Kerri, you're right on so much, but soooooo wrong on this. If these kids can't wake up on time it's because they're up too late the night before. Period. Kids have been getting up early for school for hundreds of years. Quit coddling these kids and place demands on them.
