State Police issue nearly 2,000 speeding tickets on I-95

Posted to: News Traffic - Transportation Virginia

Virginia State Police ticketed 1,941 drivers for speeding on Interstate 95 Friday and Saturday during a special campaign, police said Monday.

Operation Air, Land & Speed brought extra troopers to I-95 and I-81, where troopers stopped 2,210 speeders. Additional citations were issued for reckless driving and seatbelt violations.

State Police issued 11 DUI charges on I-95 and five on I-81, police said.

Friday and Saturday’s campaign was the seventh time since 2006 that police have put special emphasis on I-81 and I-95 at the same time.

Police in July will target I-64, I-264, I-464 and I-664.

Slowing down before going down...

Thanks for taking off the roads 16 drunks - we don't know how many lives you have save.

Thanks for slowing down the racers on our highways.

My only question is what is speeding and what is safe driving? Do we go by the posted limits or by the flow of the traffic?

I know that I am going slower because I get better gas mileage.

Phew!

Good thing they weren't out there on Sunday, when I drove to DC and back in the afternoon / evening. There were several times where traffic came to a grinding halt, for no reason at all. The worst place of course is the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. DUI and seat belt violations are fine, but speeding is weak sauce. Oh, and "processing fees" for tickets should be unconstitutional, costs for "processing" have been reduced in modern times. It's a shame State Police don't equipment the police cars with GPS location reporting for vehicle fleet management, because it'd be great to integrate their data with my vehicle NAV system to avoid speed traps.
