NORFOLK
A teenager pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting at the Southern Shopping Center on Dec. 31 .
Kristen Lavon Steen was 17 on the date of the offense, and has since turned 18.
A prosecutor’s summary of evidence filed with the court says that Jamal Matthews and a girl were approached by Steen and another male around noon on Dec. 31, near a GameStop store.
“What’s cracking?” Steen asked Matthews.
“What’s popping?” Matthews replied.
Steen then shot Matthews, the summary stated .
The greetings are used, though not exclusively, by members of rival Crips and Bloods street gangs, the summary said .
Steen ran down Little Creek Road, and police caught him after a chase.
Four shell casings were found at the scene.
Steen pleaded guilty in Circuit Court on Tuesday to the murder charge as well as a charge of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Steen is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 17. He is being held without bond in the City Jail.
