Tidewater treasure

Re 'Nothing's wrong with a regional name that has a sense of place,' Kerry Dougherty's column, June 8:

Why don't we bow to our native son, William Styron, and go with Tidewater, as in 'A Tidewater Morning'?

'A Hampton Roads Morning' brings visions of traffic jams rather than a cool, swampy and hazy day. Styron's mastery of words is indisputable. Let the masses accede to his expertise.

Hampton roads.

Hampton Roads is the area of water located at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay.

It is all Water, No land at all.

Tidewater is a far better name for the area.

I like Tidewater too.

With all the demand for locations near water the name Tidewater would seem to sell itself. Hampton Roads makes me think the Hamptons in NY. I know Long Island is not far from water either but it just doesn't seem to carry the same allure.

Hampton Roads does carry a certain link to traffic in my mind.
