Two Norfolk firefighters suffer from heat exhaustion battling fire

Two Norfolk firefighters were taken to a hospital for heat exhaustion after fighting a two-alarm house fire Saturday morning, the fire department said.

They were expected to be released later today, said Jack Goldhorn, a spokesman for Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

The fire was reported at 10:20 a.m. at a vacant house in the 600 block of W. 28th St. Firefighters encountered heavy fire when they arrived three minutes later, Goldhorn said. Heat melted a live power line, which fell into the road, he said.

It took about an hour to get the fire under control.

A family that lived in the house vacated it after a kitchen fire about two weeks ago, Goldhorn said. The cause of the fire today is undetermined, but appears suspicious, he said.

Temperatures in Hampton Roads were in the upper 90s Saturday afternoon. Firefighters take extra steps to make sure they rotate and drink cold water while working in such conditions, Goldhorn said.

"Sometimes it takes a toll on people," he said.
