Delegates from about 225 churches in the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) will hold their annual meeting in Suffolk tomorrow and Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn.

The conference encompasses UCC churches in North Carolina and eastern Virginia, with about 50 congregations from southeastern Virginia. The national denomination claims 1.4 million members.

Rev. James Forbes, Jr., pastor emeritus of Riverside Church in New York City, will be among speakers at the Suffolk gathering.

The conference's churches are known in the predominantly white UCC for being ethnically diverse. About one-third is African-American.
