JARRATT
A man who killed a store owner by sawing at his neck with a pocketknife during a 1997 robbery became the 100th person executed in Virginia since capital punishment was reinstated three decades ago.
Robert Stacy Yarbrough was pronounced dead at 9:28 p.m. Wednesday at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt. The 30-year-old was put to death by injection for the 1997 slaying of 77-year-old Cyril Hugh Hamby.
"Tell my kids I love them, and let's get it over with. Make people happy. Help celebrate the murder," Yarbrough said in his final words.
The U.S. Supreme Court and Gov. Timothy M. Kaine refused to block the execution earlier Wednesday.
Virginia ranks second to Texas, which has 406, in the number of executions since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976. Virginia restarted its capital punishment program in 1982.
Corrections officials needed 17 minutes to insert the intravenous line. It took approximately 10 minutes for him to die.
"Everything proceeded normally, other than the delay siting the line," Corrections Department spokesman Larry Traylor said.
Yarbrough was convicted and sentenced to death in June 1998. He met with family members and his attorneys Wednesday, Traylor said. He did not request a spiritual adviser.
Yarbrough's last meal was fried chicken tenders and cheese pizza.
Hamby's family members attended the execution but did not want to comment.
Five executions were scheduled over two months in Virginia after a moratorium was lifted in April following the Supreme Court's finding that the method of lethal injection used in dozens of states is constitutional.
Kevin Green was executed in May. Kaine commuted triple killer Percy Walton's sentence days before his scheduled June 10 execution because of Walton's deteriorated mental state. Two other men - Kent Jermaine Jackson and Christopher Scott Emmett - are scheduled to be executed in July.

10 years too long!
Mark is exactly right. It should not be a 10 year process. It took four years to find him guilty and then six to carry out the sentence. That needs to be fixed.
And to answer Ms. Anders...Yarborough and his accomplice had premeditation. They entered the store with a shotgun both knowing murder was a possibility. Yarborough sawed on the victims neck.
In the Navy Seal trainee case, Brown attacked the woman without planning it. The friend committed a crime by not telling police and trying to cover it up. Thats a huge difference.
Capital punishment is not a deterrant for children. It is a deterrant for bad people. It is the parents responsibility to raise their children to be good people. They failed miserably in this case.
DEATH PENALTY IS A VERY EFFECTIVE DETERRENT
Robert Stacy Yarbrough will not kill again. Now that's a deterrent.
Where are all the
"Kaine is a liberal" posters? What say you know that VA administered it's second death penalty in as many months...
Next!!!
Whos gonna be 101? Bring him on....the sooner we get rid of them the better!
next!
only 306 more to catch up with Texas....

It may surprise you to know that I am not a Christian, at best I am a Deist.
I post those Bible verses for the consumption of those who keep saying that capital punishment is anti-Christian. I like to remind them that the holy book that they hold so dear calls for the death penalty.
Oh, The Irony and Idiocy!
Will you "christians" who like to spew biblical passages as a mandate for life's decisions, please start thinking for yourselves. Using a book written thousands of years ago and taking it literally is beyond scary.
If I was a criminal
I would rather be put to death then to live the rest of my in confenment. Reliving every day of what he had done to get him in jail to begin with is a slow painful death.
IRONIC LAST WORDS
Yarborough's last words were: "....let's get it over with. Make people happy. Help celebrate the murder."
So, according to him, the execution was a "murder"? What was his crime, a high-spirited prank?
What Yarborough committed was murder. What the state did was carry out a legal, morally and Biblically-justified execution.
sorrow
i am sorry for the victim, his family and friends he has long since gone.i feel sorry for this criminals mother, you can lay blame anywhere you want to.as a parent i taught my children to work hard and respect what belongs to others.this guy got his just punishment, and i don't celebrate in his death.i pray that he ask forgiveness to god for his crime.we are supposed to follow gods laws, and god empowered us to make mans law to abide by.keeping someone on death row for 10 years seldom helps the criminal, only the greedy prosper from it.it is very hard to forgive a crime like this especially for the loved ones,i would hate to be a grandson, brother,or wife of this poor man.justice has been finally done.
AMF
Who said the death sentence is supposed to be a “deterrent?” I believe a sentence is supposed to be PUNISHMENT.
If the punishment is sufficiently publicized, it can have the added benefit of serving as a deterrent.
Yarbrough was a thug who was found guilty of committing a heinous crime. He was given the death sentence as his (IMHO well-deserved) punishment. The sentence was carried out. He is no longer able to cause harm to any one.
Hopefully by the example of the (not swift enough) execution of his sentence, others will think about the possible consequences of their actions.
A deterrent?
The death penalty will never be a deterrent until they are held in a public place, where a father can take his son who`s heading down the wrong path and show him whats in store for him. Thats a deterrent.

Finding this so funny says more than YOU will ever understand.
death penalty
First of all the death penalty should have never been abolished in the first place. People who commit these type of crimes show pay the highest price. There is absolutely no excuse for such a terrible crime. The same old excuse "I was drunk or high on drugs" such a cop out...As many people have stated the parents are part of the problem. You parents do your self a favor and stop having unwanted children who will only pick up your bad habits!!!
Disgustingly inhumane.
What a horrific way to die and for what? A few dollars and some booze? Disgusting.
His partner should have gotten the same sentence. Garbage. Just plain garbage.
Death for a murderer
Anytime anyone murders someone, they should be prepared to pay the ultimate price. They took a life, why should not their life be forfeit for doing so? To me, letting someone like this die by lethal injection is being very kind in comparison to how he murdered his victim. The problem is not with the death penalty but in how long it takes to get it done, especially when it comes to hidious crimes like this.
More interesting news
Ok folks, how does this case differ from Turner...the good little white boy, ex-Navy, "I am innocent of strangling Jennifer Evans, I only sat in the car while it rocked when Brown strangled her and helped dump the body. It happened so fast, I was powerless to do anything." The executed man in this article was the only person to commit the actual murder, yet his accomplice who was with him and "watched" gets 25 years in prison as well for first-degree murder. He didn't kill anyone, he was just sitting in the store while the clerk was nearly decapitated. How is it that Turner then may only have been an "accessory after the fact?" Real interesting. Justice for all...the 17 year old accomplice in this case should be released, as his crime related to the murder would be "accessory after the fact" for not reporting. Ok, give him some time for the robbery, too.
HOO RAY!!
He finally got his just reward for being a worthless piece of trash and hurting other humans. I hope he suffers in eternity. People like this are like mad dogs, you have to put them to sleep
The fact's are:
"Yarbrough and former high school classmate Dominic Jackson Rainey waited at a picnic table across the road from Hamby's Store on May 8, 1997, until all the customers left." Intent and premeditation
"Yarbrough asked Hamby twice where his guns were hidden, and when he didn't get an answer he put down his shotgun, took out a three-bladed "Uncle Henry" pocketknife and cut the front and back of Hamby's neck in a sawing motion as Hamby pleaded for him to stop. Medical experts estimate it may have taken 15 minutes for Hamby to bleed to death." Henious cruelty in the murder demonstrated
Yarbrough took Hamby's wallet, and the men grabbed some beer, wine and cigarettes and fled the store. Days later, they were arrested.
Robbery and looking for the means to commit more crimes.
Another useless burden to society exterminated.
ONE LESS TO FEED!
Who's up next???
Can't do the time..don't do the crime
I don't understand how people think we should abolish the death penalty..what should we do then? Can they come live with you and your family? Also, if you make a conscious decision to take a life, be prepared to face the consequences. Saying he had a bad childhood is just an excuse...we live in a "blame it on somebody else" society where nobody wants to be held responsible for their actions. I for one think they should bring back public executions...scare them straight and maybe crime wouldn't be so rampant. The more excuses made, the more reason people feel it is okay to hurt others. An eye for an eye....maybe we would have a better society that way.
good riddance
As a law abiding tax payer, I am glad that I don't have to support people like this. Keep fryin' them!
Finally
The only injustice here is the fact we taxpayers had to pay his bills an additional 11 years before doing what should have been done in 1997.
Re: Yarbrough
I keep reading about people who are against the death penalty. What I do not read is a suggestion for alternative type of punishment. We all agree the the process takes way to long. Lawyers make big names for themselves on these types of cases, but they do have an oath to provide the very best defense for their client. This case, I wonder what Yarbrough was thinking when he cut the 77 year old mans throat. As your self this, What if it was your father or grand father. What type of punishment would you accept. How about we just put him on a raft and push him out to sea, is that cruel or is it unusual. I guess it is what society is willing to accept. I say let the dead's man family make the choice.
OK, LET'S QUOTE THE BIBLE
Genesis 9:6 says, "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God man was made."
Exodus 21:12 says, "Whoever strikes a man a mortal blow must be put to death."
Looks pretty definitive to me. The Bible calls for capital punishment.
I wonder what the "carbon
I wonder what the "carbon footprint" will be.
Hey gknutson
What's up doc?
A Rabit Animal ...
is being put to sleep. That's all this is.
@deadkoz
One thing is certain; you know absolutely nothing about the Bible. Try reading it before you misquote it.
GeorgeS....
Please make me stop laughing. My personal forms of punishment for this brutal of a crime are far beyond letting him go to sleep. Blood thirsty? No. Exacting just punishment for brutal murder? Absolutely!!! Too bad we don't have a human sized fry pan to scald his sorry butt to a crispy tater and throw his trash ashes in an outhouse.
