A Williamsburg priest, the Rev. Herman "Holly" Hollerith IV, is among five candidates up for election as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia.
The diocese, which includes all of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore, has had an interim bishop since the early retirement in 2006 of Bishop David C. Bane Jr. The candidates were announced Thursday.
Hollerith, 52, is the priest at Bruton Parish, a historic Episcopal congregation in Williamsburg. He was ordained in 1983 and served churches in Roanoke, Lynchburg and Georgetown, S.C. He is married and has three children.
The other nominees are:
- The Rev. Edward H. Harrison of St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Fla.
- The Rev. Canon E. Daniel Smith, who is on the bishop's staff in the Diocese of Missouri, based in St. Louis.
- The Rev. L. Murdock Smith of St. Martin's Church in Charlotte, N.C.
- The Rev. Mary C. Sulerud, Canon for Deployment and Vocational Ministry in the Diocese of Washington, Washington, D. C.
Biographical information on the five nominees is posted online at www.svabishop.org. The five will meet members of the diocese in a series of meetings in mid-September.
The new bishop is to be elected Sept. 27 by the diocese's annual council. A formal consecration will follow in February.
According to its Web site, the diocese spans the southeastern third of the state. It has more than 170 ordained clergy and more than 37,000 members in 123 churches. It is based in Norfolk.
