Marketta Jones was ordered to serve 33 years in prison on Wednesday for shooting a man who tried to steal a gun from her more than two years ago.

Circuit Judge William O'Brien affirmed the jury's recommendation after a trial in February. Jones, 42, was convicted of aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the shooting of Casey McCook at the Witchduck Crescent apartments on Shaman Crescent.

The shooting occurred on Nov. 20, 2006 after Jones awoke from a night of bingeing on drugs and drinking moonshine.

Prosecutors said during the trial that Jones fired the 9 mm semiautomatic weapon at McCook's chest after he tried to steal the pistol to buy drugs.

McCook spent three weeks in a coma and suffered permanent brain damage and partial paralysis from his injuries.
