CHESAPEAKE
Police spent Tuesday searching for suspects and motives in two fatal shootings that happened less than four miles apart.
Police could not say whether the shooting of Lonnie Andrews Jr., 18, early Tuesday morning and the slaying of Dontrell Whitehurst, 26, later that afternoon are related, police spokesman Gus Mojica said. "There's no way of telling right now," he said.
Police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old around 7 p.m. Tuesday in connection with Andrews' slaying. Because of his age, the suspect was not named. Mojica said he was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Andrews was shot at 2:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Lindale Drive, off Campostella Road. Whitehurst was shot about 3-1/2 miles away Tuesday afternoon in the 3000 block of Parkside Drive.
As of late Tuesday, no arrests had been made in Whitehurst's killing, Mojica said.
Police responded to a report of shots fired at Lindale Drive around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. They found Andrews, a former football star at Oscar Smith High School, suffering from a gunshot wound on a lawn. He was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the second killing, police received a report of a man on the ground in the 3000 block of Parkside Drive around 1 p.m., Mojica said. Whitehurst, of the 1400 block of Oliver Ave., died at the scene.
Police cordoned off an area at the apartment complex where Whitehurst was shot Tuesday to investigate. Because Whitehurst didn't live in the complex, most of them said they didn't know him well, although they'd seen him around. Family members who came to the scene said they were too distraught to talk.
In November, two people were shot to death in separate incidents within six hours in Chesapeake. Ny-Asia Till-mon, 1, her grandmother and her uncle were shot around 4 p.m. Nov. 10 in the 3700 block of Bainbridge Blvd. Ny-Asia was killed. Less than three miles away, 22-year-old Lawrence Antonio White of the 1100 block of Commerce Ave. was killed around 10 p.m.
Anyone with information about Tuesday's shootings can call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887).

I would still like to know
I would still like to know and I think it's important to find out where these thugs get their guns. If we can get a better understanding of that then I think we have a better chance of doing something positive to reduce these violent crimes with todays youth.

In that aspect, yes. You are correct. I was thinking along the lines of legally obtaining a handgun (and in hindsight, it doesn't really apply in this case). When you think of illegally obtaining a handgun, it is and always has been very easy to do, and that is most unfortunate. I agree that we need to go after and deal with harshly both the people who deal in illegal guns as well as the method in which they obtained those guns.
My stance has nothing to do with pro-gun or anti-gun. Its all about doing what makes sense in a rational approach to the problem.
RE: Wrong Direction

I can only hope!
over the top....
My comments must be a little over the top. The comment I wrote in reference to this story was what I thought to be very true and to the point. But I guess I can understand why it was not posted because it requires a group of people to call for peace within themselves. Instead you delete my post and ask us to stick our heads in the sand AGAIN.
Gun owners
1.4 million guns were stolen in the last 15 years, so the gun owners are the ones providing criminals with guns. It's a public service.
Lonnie Andrews - This is who this is about
I went to the OLD Oscar Smith;I live in the neghborhood that someone commented was "bad"; my daughter goes to the New Oscar Smith; bottom line is you make your life what it is. This young man was on a road to something special. Dont question why he was out, they answered that; dont question where he lived, it IS a nice quiet area; dont question his family, they loved him; period. Everyone wants to point a finger or try to figure out What Went Wrong, well what went wrong was this: A boy who was upset with Lonnie took it upon himself to Kill this bright young man because of what? Did they have an arguement? Was the boy jealous of Lonnie because Lonnie was going somewhere with his life? And who is he to decide Lonnie's fate? He is not God, he is not anything but a fellow human. What has the our world come to when handling things mean Death? I did not know Lonnie , but as a Mom and a human; I can only imagine the pain his family is feeling. My daughter said that Lonnie would light up a room, make everyone laugh and was very nice to all. God Bless you Lonnie for making the world brighter while you were here. I hope your family takes strength in knowing you are in Heaven now; the
2 dead in separate shootings....
No, its "not too many guns" we have to get off the street. Its the fools, freaks, nuts, junkies, jerks and mentally deficient miscreants that need to be removed from the streets. Guns only make them brave while being STUPID. Take the gun away and they are still STUPID and will still commit crimes. And yes, they will still kill because they do not CARE. It is not the gun that kills, its the fools that use them. If you think guns kill, then blame the keyboard for all the mispelled words in some of the prior posts. Education will not work! We have already "dumbed down" our education system so that no "chillren" are left behind, that a blithering idiot can graduate.
Wrong direction
It's not the guns that is the problem. England is going through a rash of knife killings. The weapon doesn't matter. It's the mentality behind it. Most of these people just all think like georges.

While I agree with most of your comment, I truly believe the one about guns being hard to get is wrong. I would be willing to bet you can go to parts of any city in the area and walk away with just about any kind of firearm you can think of. To the families if the victims, my heart felt thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Did the Cold War work?
"Not enough guns"...this statement and the sentiment behind it reminds of the Cold War stand-off when the USA and the former USSR both had an insane number of nukes pointed at each other. The premise that neither would fire because we'd all be dead if either did.
RE: why I carry a gun
"There aren't too many guns--there aren't enough! When every law abiding citizen carries a gun to protect themselves from these scumbags, crime rates will be a thing of the past."
Picture that if you will, everyone walking around with a gun on their hip ready to shoot at the least little thing. Crime rates will not be a thing of the past just because everyone carries a gun, if anything there will be more shooting. Shoot now, ask questions later is not a good thing. Some of the comments from gun owners are absolutely scary. It looks to me many are just looking for an excuse to exercise their right to own a gun to protect their home and shoot someone. Bang, bang your dead! Man, I feel good because I have the right. Geez, what is this society coming too?
Good reason to carry
My gun is like Mastter Card --I don't leave home without it
Why I carry a gun
Stories like this reaffirm the reason I don't leave home without a gun. The crime rate in any place with liberal concealed carry permit rules and open carry drops like a rock. There aren't too many guns--there aren't enough! When every law abiding citizen carries a gun to protect themselves from these scumbags, crime rates will be a thing of the past. Criminals look for easy targets--not armed ones who can and will fight back. The Virginia Tech massacre would not have happened or certainly would not have been as bad if ONE other person had exercised their constitutional right to carry a gun. Seung-hui Cho looked for a large number of helpless victims--like all mass murderers do--and found them because the were made helpless by the insanity of the school rules not allowing legally permitted concealed carry. Their willingness to obey the law and rules came at a heavy price because they paid for it with their lives.
Mentality of youth
Yes, there may be too many guns on the street, but why? Its not that they are so easy to get. In older generations, guns were easier to get, yet the violence wasnt as bad. I think its more the mindset and mentality of youth. There is no reguard for human life, no respect (with a HUGE emphasis on no respect).
Who's fault is that? This should be the true focus of discussion. It's not the method, but what motivates a person to kill that is the true problem.
17
17, so his name is released????? That's just one thing that needs to be canged. When there is a juvenile committing such crimes, the parents name should be released and they too should be asrrested for child neglect and abuse. It's important to know where this juvenile got the gun he used. Was it his paents? Did he seal it? Did he buy it off the street? We have got to track these guns and get them off the street. Too many innocent people are being killed.
Very sad. Far too many guns
Very sad. Far too many guns floating around on the streets.
