Beet it

I mentioned earlier we joined a CSA for the summer, relying more heavily on local vegetables and also giving us a chance to try out a bunch of new recipes. In the spirit of trying new things I've been eating beets. I made enough borscht to feed a Lithuanian army last week and over the weekend my wife made a beet salad that, while good the first night, now makes her gag. We are on beet overload. But it appears we need to eat more of them. Not only am I guessing that they'll be in this week's box of veggies at the market, now the NYT says beets are exactly the types of food we should be eating. Yum. They must think we're all Mose Schrute.

In other grocery store news:

- People are upset about the shape of a milk jug. Really? A milk jug?!? Change is no harder to swallow than just one more serving of my borscht.

- That weird guy in the freezer aisle? He probably works for Consumer Reports.

Jon is shopping for Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream — nine pints of it. And all need to have rolled off the same production line, on the same date. He enters the supermarket carrying a Styrofoam cooler full of dry ice (to keep the ice cream cold), a pair of gloves (to keep his fingers warm), and a flashlight (to help him see the inkless indentations on the bottom of each container that show where and when it was manufactured). Reaching the freezer section, he sits down and begins stacking ice cream on the floor. "Eventually a stocker comes over," Jon says, recalling the incident. "He's not happy."
