Care now or pay later

I was equally proud and disappointed when I read "Horse club’s fate in council’s hands," Hampton Roads, July 15.

I am proud of Anthony Hooper for taking the time to help our future generations, who need people to show that they care. Hooper has shown the kids in his community that he cares, but some neighbors don’t believe he should be there.

I have a question for the neighbors who disagree with his location. These are kids from Hampton Roads and surrounding areas; if they don’t get the necessary guidance to become productive adults, where do you think they are going to go to rob, steal, or kill? Your house!

HUH?

I saw absolutely no racism in the writer's comments nor any call for taxpayer money.

You are the one that pulled out the race card not the letter writer.

No, Warren, I think it is a Hillary opinion!

She used to say "it takes a village to raise a child" and many people of all races believed her and quote that. I do think she may have more people who believe that in the black community just due to lots of single moms who probably need an extra hand raising kids. When you're alone . . . it's just easier to think that the responsibility for these kids is spread over more people than just you!

I'm with you, Warren, I'll raise my own family with an occasional hand from a friend. But . . . this other idea is out there and has been for almost 20 years. Cheers, MGM

Is this a racist opinion? You decide

The writer assumes that if tax payers don’t help the horse club, we can expect a crime wave.

First, the necessary guidance to become productive adults should come from parents, the role models. Millions of kids who don’t ride horses become productive citizens. The horse club appears to be primarily helping black kids. Is writer suggesting that black parents are not well suited to raise their children into productive citizens and need outside help to do their job?
