During its glory years in 1920's, 30's and 40's, Church Street was considered Norfolk's Harlem -- an area concentrated by African-American residents and flourishing with African-American businesses. Movie theaters, the Greenleaf Ballroom, the Plaza Hotel, and the Attucks Theater staked Church Street's claim as Norfolk's Uptown.
