MASS TRANSIT

Hampton Roads Transit buses offers service in seven cities: Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. Most fares are $1.50 for adults, $1 for those 18 and younger, 75 cents for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Children under 38 inches tall ride for free. www.gohrt.com, (757) 222-6100

 

Norfolk Electric Transit buses: NET buses carry passengers for free through downtown Norfolk, with a weekday route that includes Granby and Main streets and City Hall and a weekend route from Waterside Drive to the Chrysler Museum of Art, including a Harbor Park stop on game days. Hours: 6:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon-midnight Saturday and noon-8 p.m. Sunday

VB Wave The hybrid-electric shuttles charge $1 a trip and offer multiday passes. The shuttles go along Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach from Second to 40th streets. Routes extend to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and Lynnhaven Mall and connections to other bus routes. (800) VABEACH

The MAX The Metro Area Express offers regional express bus service for commuters, with park-and-ride lots and routes connecting all of Hampton Roads. Fare is $3, with multiday passes available.

Portsmouth Loop Hybrid-electric shuttles run every 15 to 30 minutes through downtown Portsmouth. Fare is 50 cents.

Light rail on the way A light rail line, The Tide, with a 7.4-mile east-to-west route through Norfolk is to begin service in 2010.

 

FERRY SERVICE

To cross the Elizabeth River in style, HRT provides a ferry service between downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth. Experience the paddle-wheel ferry for $1 a ride.
