DMV's new user fees

I sat down to stroke a check to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my automobile registration, and I found inside a notice of a new fee. As of July 1, those who actually visit a DMV office will be charged an additional $5 to renew their vehicle registration. The notice said the fee is 'to reduce the number of customers who rely on DMV customer service centers to conduct routine transactions.' So now we will pay extra money to use a service that we already are paying for. Well, what exactly are DMV customer service centers for, anyway?

That's not the point. The point is that this type of thing encourages people not to drive. It's great!

Funny thing, if the DMV offered a $5 discount for online transactions most people would have ignored it. By adding $5 it gets peoples attention. Strange huh? Regardless, most transactions will be entirely online soon. This was just a nudge. If you all really want to be angry, ask yourselves why the price isn't going down when it is largely automated.

Socialist governors? Have you been living under a rock for the past 12 years? Give me a break. I bet you think that Gilmore is a fiscal genius.

The PIN

This thing about the PIN is interesting. I applied for and received a PIN when DMV first went on line and since then I have done numerous transactions online and have never been asked for my PIN.
Ira, you are a trip! Who ever heard of car pooling to go to the DMV?

Kudos!

Thousands of single passenger trips will be avoided. All around good thing.

Va is one of the lower per capita states on expenditures for social programs of which many are mh/mr clients. I guess we should throw out the mentally and physically handicapped because as you put it they contribute nothing. Sheesh. There are so many moving parts to this issue and to make it sound so simple as "socialist democrat governors" is just intellectually dishonest and untrue. It is interesting to note that those governors you bemoan had the budgets approved by Republican controlled legislatures. How do you explain that one? Before one decides to deride and insult others one should at least take the time to understand all the complexities involved and the consequences of any action taken. Raise taxes, lower taxes, increase funding, cut finding, unfunded mandates from the Fed, unemployment, the economy, etc all have consequences. We have to realize this and make policy based on

PIN Number

You can request a PIN online, it will come in the mail in a few days.

Customer Service???

Anyone who believes that the DMV, at least the area of southside Hampton Roads is customer oriented is unfamiliar with good customer service. These people come across as doing you a favor by waiting on you and putting up with you. At no time do you get the impression that they are there to serve you. Use your computer and credit card whenever you can and you will be pleased with their service.

Funding robbed by democrats

The reason our government services agencies are having to charge extra fees is because our last 2 socialist democrat governors have redirected the normal funding to their social programs for those who have never contributed one positive thing to our Commonwealth. Instead they are on the receiving end of hard earned tax dollars and are wanting even more "free money" and other aid.

The name is wrong...

these are not service centers....far from it....the people in there have bad attitudes and make you feel like they are doing you a favor..if ever there was a state agency ripe for outsourcing to a private entity, it's the DMV.....without a doubt the most inefficient agency in all of state gov...

DMV

Can you apply for a PIN to do business online via the computer, or do you still have to go to the office to do that? Been awhile since I got mine. And yes, it saves me lots of time doing renewals and address changes and such online. But to charge for using the office is still a bit over the top.

surprise!!

I applaud Virginia DMV as to this particular issue. It allowed payment at the last possible date and provided me with an instant receipt (which is good until your stickers arrive via USPS). For those of you without internet access I suggest you go to the nearest alternative source (library, family member or even a neighbor) and complete the transaction. I'd rather wait for computer accesss at a library instead of a clerk (excuse me "customer service representative") at DMV. This process can be improved upon by DMV providing service kiosks (without the fee)inside their facilities in the same manner that Cox cable and a lot of the cellular companies do. Hey! "government" got something right for a change!
