PORTSMOUTH

A fire that investigators believe may have been sparked by a power line burned down a Portsmouth church late Saturday.

The fire department received a call just before 11 p.m. about a structure on fire on the 1400 block of Highland Avenue, said Battalion Chief Jim Hoffler.

Not long after firefighters arrived, the front of the building collapsed, Hoffler said. It was an old house that had been converted into a church, he said.

No one was inside the building at the time, and no one was injured.

Witnesses said they saw the fire start at the spot where the power line connected to the building, Hoffler said. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
