A bunker on the island once hosued 60 men, searching the mouth of the Chesapeake for German U-boats Since 1973, the island has been a national wildlife refuge, a temporary home to tens of thousands of migrating birds and a nesting ground for the largest colonies of brown pelicans and royal terns in Virginia. The refuge staff offers group tours on Saturdays through March, and again on May 13 for the annual International Migratory Bird Celebration.
