Fort Pocahontas was a supply depot built and manned by hundreds of United States Colored Troops under the command of Bridadier Gen. Edward Wild. On May 24, 1864, the USCTs held the fort against a Confederate attack led by Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee, Robert E. Lee's nephew. The victory secured this Union outpost and proved to critics that African Americans could fight equally as well as white soldiers.
Virtually untouched for 130 years, the Va. Dept. of Historic Resources views the fort as ''one of the best preserved fort sites.''
